Title: Installed Spectrum display in my S2000
Post by: dpalmi on October 28, 2008, 02:04:38 PM
Hello all!

I finally got my 1st Spectrum display mounted and running in one of my S2000 machines.  I thought I would share some of the things I learned in doing this and some pictures.

First, you DO NOT need a Netplex Distribution board (the picture below is just for reference - I do not have one of these).  It seems there was some confusion on this.  The only reason you need this board is if you have more than one Netplex device in your topbox, such as a Spectrum AND a Vision Display.  The board is basically just a splitter and has no logic on it.

Now if you don’t have this board, you will need a semi-specialized cable.   Idesign (a NLG member) made mine and I have them pictured below.  What he did was make a cable that connects to the standard IGT cable, so if I ever need to add a Distribution board I won’t have to get a new cable – so it’s actually two cables connected together.  The standard one from IGT and the one idesign made for me.  If you're looking for your own cable, send idesign a PM - he did a great job and I highly recommend him :)

This cable allows me to plug directly into the connectors in the back left corner of the top box.

I was able to mount my display where the player tracking bar is located.  I took the display itself apart to make the screen part of the display as small as possible.  I was then able to fit this part into the existing metal bracket in my machine that holds up the glass.  I did have to make the pre-cut hole in this bracket taller – but I wanted to keep this piece in if I could.  I used a hot glue gun to hold the progressive display in this bracket.  As you can see, I also used black electrical tape to cover up the gaps to minimize the light that comes from the box.

After the display was installed, I just set the rest of the pieces into the top box.

Then it was just a matter of cutting the players tracking cover to the correct size.  Boy, this was tougher than I thought it would be!  And I was trying to be as careful as I could to make it look nice.  It was tough for me to cut a straight edge.

And here's how it looks all together....

Now I have one more machine I'm going to do the same thing to....should be easier the 2nd time around :)

Looks good, Dan.

Just as a side note, has anyone figured out the dipswitch settings in the back of the Spectrum II? What setting for what color, and isn't there a color changing setting? All red, then all green then all orange?

 Dan (tacman)

Hello Tacman.

Thanks!  The dips on the back control the color of the display.  There was a post on this on the old NLG - but I did a search and couldn't find it - so it must not have been moved.  I will try to figure it out on mine and post my results.  You can select from green, red or orange.  Now realize - the display won't change colors on it's own, or scroll through the colors - from what I understand.  You set the color and that's the only color it displays....

Yeah, I remember that it was discussed, but I do not recall anyone ever posting a listing of Spectrum dipswitch configurations to what color/feature etc.

 Dan (tacman)

It would be nice if a manual or tech bullettin was available on these to see what settings or features are available.

Great job, and great pictures to show it all!

You may wish to consider putting a sheet of light to medium window tint in front of the display -- it'll help make the "white" of the non-lit characters vanish.  Something to think about, anyway.

I know it was discussed that there's no way to make the displays change color on their own, but at the local casino they have a bank of "Ancient Chinese Secret" iGame slots with Spectrum displays, and they DO change color on their own -- they (very slowly) cycle between red, green, and yellow.

Title: Re: Installed Spectrum display in my S2000
Post by: tacman on October 29, 2008, 09:03:00 PM
I thought that was also discussed on the old site as well as one of the features but no one ever mentioned finding the dip coniguration for that. Any casino techs have the answer about color rotaion on the Spectrum II?  How about posting the configurations we do know about?  :103-

 Dan (tacman)

Hey Kev, maybe the color rotation is an Ancient Chinese Secret!  :25-  :25-  :25-

Hello all!

Great news!

I'm SO glad you guys made me curious...I've played with the dips on my Spectrum and found the secret to scrolling colors!

Ok - 2 sets of dips - 4 switches each.  On mine - all 8 switches were all off.  Here's what I found...

S1
1 - didn't do anything
2 - causes colors to scroll from red to green to yellow (see video) - off is 1 color - on is scroll - SECRET SETTING!!
3 - changes single color - off is green - on is red
4 - on - does a moving line test to see if all leds are working

S2
1 - on - makes all red leds come on to see if all leds are working
2 - on - makes all orange leds come on to see if all leds are working
3 - on - makes all green leds come on to see if all leds are working
4 - didn't do anything

So I hope that helps - I know it made me happy  :3-

I need those cables, I dont have Power/Netplex Dist. Board. either

I need the cables he shows.
The one I got off ebay has a blown fuse.

I want to know denomination of machine, configuration details, Is it a percentage based programming or actual value programming like the Mikohn handles.

Hello!

Note:  this is a custom cable.  Just contact idesign here at NLG http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?action=profile;u=6 (http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?action=profile;u=6) and I'm sure he would be glad to make you one.

Denomiation is set to a quarter (25 cents).  Setup was in the Key Chip menu 7.1.4 - so I did need to use a Key Chip.  The increment is based on a percentage - I didn't see any options for an actual value.  The menu choice are very similar to the options you get on the Photon display for a S+ - you have a starting/reset value, current value, and percentage.  I will look at my machine tonight and get the exact menu names/etc.  Was there another setting you were looking for?

I've found that it only took me 3 months to swap out the switches on my S2000, and the time required for my Spectrum (which I've had for at least 4 months) install will be created by that lovely invention called "Vacation" at the end of the year!  :72- :72- :72-

CaptainHappy,

Work and other commitments in your life has kept you away from your machines.
It happens to all of us at times. Your machines will forgive you eventually.

I am trying to disassemble mine, to get at the fuses and double check somethings.
Mine has a full cover on it. I was able to get the 4 nuts and 6 of the 10 screws removed that hold the cover on. 4 of them will not come out.
I am thinking of using my soldering iron to heat them up a bit to see if that will release them.
or the fact that the screws and the holes are different metals and that caused them to seize up.

Here's the display in the bracket - I used some black electrical tap just to cover up the gaps to stop light coming through...

I used a hot glue gun to hold the spectrum display in the bracket...

I also had to bend the tabs below in red flater on the player tracking cover to make them align properly into the bracket...

I guess mine only took 1 year to get installed and going, that is still too long for such a project.

Now if I can get it to display the right amount. its showing the top award from the cham II+ of 8100.00, not the second level that is about 4700
I wonder if Mikohn designed it for them.  The font and odometer look to me like the Cham II+, other than comma and color setup.

Well, I finally got this topper going.  :3- Railroad94 found a broken solder joint  :25- in the chaser lights on his last visit that have been giving me fits. I set dip #2 in the first row according to dpalmi's instructions from the previous posts, wired everything up and closed and mounted the topper. Ran the keychip setup and it worked fine, except it does not scroll into different colors   :37- it just stays green. I did notice that some of my displays are marked Spectrum II and Spectrum Huff?  :103- dont know if that makes a difference. I'm just happy the topper is fully operational and will worry about the scrolling colors later!

Dan (tacman)

Will change the Jackpot later as well!

They are Spectrum II because IGT had a vendor make a Spectrum for the S+ and PE that interfaces to the machine at the 15 pin top box connector and grabs power from the 120V in the top box. I have 2 of them and one Spectrum II.

I wonder what Display I got with this item from eBay

Title: Re: Installed Spectrum display in my S2000
Post by: tacman on December 08, 2008, 03:58:11 PM
Well, I played around a little with the display and obviously the Chinese secret for scrolling is not the same as dpalmi's. The #2 dip on with all other dips off does not do a thing with mine. I did find that with the below settings are the results for my display:

1st dip set off, 2nd dip set off- green progressive
1st dip set #3 on, 2nd dip set off- red progressive
1st dip set #1 & #3 on, 2nd dip set off- amber progressive

I have tried all these settings with and without #2 in the 1st dip set being on. I also did a power down in between settings in case the display had to reset. Outcome-so far no scrolling colors.  :103-

Foster,

You have me intriqued. A spectrum for the S+ that works off the top box progressive connector ??
Does it get programmed the same as the behind the payglass unit ......

I think I need a few of these all of a sudden..... heres why....

I run a linked progressive as my main and a behind the payglass as the second level one....

I have run into an interesting situation where I have Double Diamond Deluxe in my S+ and there is no second level progressive. However as unsupported as this may sound the second level progressive continues to increment.
This got me curious if it was a one-of bug, so I slapped in Munsters into another one of my other slots - this again does not have the second level progressive .... and guess what it increments as well.

Of course having these displays shine through where they are not supposed to looks like C :58- :58- p and this is where I am thinking the spectrum at the top might be the ticket.

One other thing here..... I had given Midas a behind the payglass progressive and he hooked it up to his PE+ - subsequently this blew his door optics. Just for good measure he tried it again with the same results. Are you sure this would be supported
on the PE+ ? The reason I ask is that on the PE+ setup - there is no option for standalone progressive programming.

Title: Re: Installed Spectrum display in my S2000
Post by: Foster on December 08, 2008, 08:39:44 PM
I was only guessing about the PE being supported.
Unless the PE or PE+ has the same signals in the top box that the S+ has it wont work.

Yes it gets programmed by the machine just like the behind the glass unit.
In fact John42355 on ebay has the non Micro controller based behind the glass progressive LED driver board. eBay 250104960296
I have built 2 of them from the schematics in the Liberty Bell book on the S+. I think they where for the S originally but do work in the S+.
Before the Micro controller based version that we currently have or lemans69 is selling.
The S+ drives the progressive data to that connector the same way it drives the player display.

Player Display
DD0 serial data
DCLK data clocking
STB1 strobe signal
GND
VB

Progressive signals (Mini Photon or S+ spectrum)
DD0 serial data
DCLK data clocking
STB2 strobe signal
GND
VB

note DD0, DCLK, STB1 and STB2 are inverse logic 0v is 1, and VB or Vcc is 0.

I even hooked up a spare player display to the progressive signals in the top box and it works once progressive is enabled and configured.
Just looks funny seeing the progressive split.

The S+ Spectrum  I have available needs a small part on the power supply and either the drivers or the LED have a slight issue on the smaller display
When I get a chance I will test it and try to post pictures.

For the small stand alone progressive to show second level progressive move ribbon cable to the connector above or below it.

Ok - 2 sets of dips - 4 switches each.  On mine - all 8 switches were all off.  Here's what I found...

Hey can you psot back with your spectrum board P/N and SDF version?

Hello!

The slot shows "SDF100 12 Apr 2002".  There is a chip on the controller board with a sticker that says "SDF104 R".  As far as a P/N - the display board itself has "PN 75137800 REV A".  I don't see a P/N on the controller board - there is another sticker on another chip that says "SPECTRUM HEFF 32808401 REV A".  Are these the numbers you're looking for?

I wonder if SDF 104 removed the scrolling color option.
I cant get it to do the scrolling colors.
Now if you turn on switch 1 and 3 you get Orange on the SDF104

dpalmi.. what numbers does the other PLCC chip above it have, the one in the U12 ?

Hello all!

Ok - after all this discussion - I decided to double check and I made a mistake.  I have two Spectrums, one in a machine and the other is not.  The one in the machine - which scrolls the colors - the Version menu shows "SDF100 12 Apr 2002" and the chip itself has no label.  The 2nd one, which was not in a machine but I temporally put it in to verify has the label "SDF104 R" and the Version Menu also shows "SDF104 R" - this one does NOT scroll.  So it would appear the SDF100 is what is needed.  I'm sorry for the confusion - it was due to my own laziness.  :25-

I tried both displays with the scrolling controller and both worked with no issue...

Hello all!

I went a step further and took the "SDF100" chip out of the scrolling display and put it in the display that would not scroll...and what do you know, now that display is able to scroll.  So it seems without a doubt that the "SDF100" is the chip you need to scroll.  I'm kind of surprised a higher version of the chip would be missing that feature.  Sucks for me because now I have one display that scrolls and another that doesn't, unless I buy a PLCC burner...

OK,  I figured it out.  Here are the settings.  S1 all switches off except for 2.  S2 all switches off.  The scrolling is very slow to change so initially I thought it wasn't doing it.  It seems to change about every 7 seconds or so.  I was expecting it to be more like the Mikohn displays.

Karma to Dan#2 for finding this.

Also, I have another Spectrum meter with a SD0102 chip in it that does the same thing.

Jeff, yeah watching dpalmi's video 7-9 sec for color change is about right. Unfortunately, I guess the sdf chip is the key, mine and Railroad94's SDF 104 chips do not support the color scrolling option, at least with that #2 dip setting.

Jeff, you sure about S2? Dip banks 1 & 2 are reversed on the board, so on in one bank is off on the other.

Dan #2
There are two ways to change it to SDF100, one is to flash the PLCC the other is to use the IGT download tool.     The download tool uses a fiber optic converter to RS232 and the IGT update program which connects to the MPU board optics.   If you have seen the menu "download" on the S2000 that is what it's for.

I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble but I have 2 Spectrums, both with SDF100 12 Apr 2002  in them and they don't scroll.  The large chip on the controllers are labeled Spectrum HEFF 32808401 Rev A 06JAN03.  I think the other chip next to the SDF100 chip may have something to do with it.

Hmmm...maybe there is more.  I only moved the one chip from the scrolling to the non scrolling and then the non-scrolling scrolled...so hard for me to answer.  The 2nd PLCC on one of my boards is labeled (shown below).  The other one has no label.

708 170 00
03/27/02
(1-64K)
@IGT

Also, in order to scroll is S1 -2 the only one one?

On mine, yes.  All off except s1 - 2 on.

Is the download tool something I could get a hold of?  Also, if I could get the dowload tool and converter, I assume I would also need the SDF100 in a file version that I could use with the downloader...right?  Sounds like a burner would be easier...for me anyway :)

Dan, I stand corrected.  You have a keen eye, those dip switches are reversed.  I had it right the first time.  All on S2 are off.  On S1 only number 2 is on.

Jeff, yeah the cheaters glasses get a heck of a workout with these boards! Forget to take them off and almost killed myself walking up the steps though! :5-

This is getting confusing!  lol....

The only chip I moved is the one right next to S1.  Which ever board I put this chip in scrolls.  This is the chip that the Version menu shows as "SDF100".

Hello all!

Well, as I investigate the IGT Downloader tool - it appears at minimum I would at least need a Serial to Fiber adapter/transceiver which start around $30-$40 on eBay to connect my machine to my computer.  I think I would rather take that money and invest it toward a burner.  I have run into instances before where I could have saved myself money if I had a burner....

Thanks,

on the old site we had long topics on which burner to get.

The 2 that come to mind are Batronix and MCUMALL.

http://www.batronix.com (http://www.batronix.com)

BX40 (super super Fast but costs more)  super easy software program to use too and does everything under the sun.

http://mcumall.com (http://mcumall.com)

True-USB Willem programmer(GQ-4X)  Also super easy program to use and overall best value in my humble opinion.   It does require an adapter for PLCC but it comes with it in the full package.    FAST as well

Try to avoid the basic Willem Programmer that is all over eBay as most will not do the PLCC chips and or 40PIN S2000 Base etc.   Also they are much slower but some are decent.

Hello all!

Just wanted to post an update.  I received a new second SDF100 chip and installed it into my display that would not scroll and put it in my machine and now it SCROLLS!  So it would seem the SDF100 is the key.  That was the only thing I changed to make the non-scrolling display start to scroll.  It seems odd a newer version would have this feature removed - but hey, IGT has done weirder things before....

Dpalmi,
Did you modify the chip at all (burn new information into it,etc.) , or did you just drop it in straight from the store?
If that's all it took , then that's great! I haven't gotten into chip burning yet.
Life is complicated enough without getting into reading and deciphering checksums and the like...lol

Hello!

I do not own a burner - I had someone else burn this for me, so I will check with them to see if they did anything special.  But I don't believe they did....

Ok, so vacation this winter (what with the trip to see Joey and avail my dirtbike of some of the finest and most challenging desert riding I've seen in years, and my daughter has never seen) was not used to install my Vision.

But, all is not lost. Can anyone identify the 3 connectors here, and supply a pinout?

I've seen this quoted picture in another thread

but can't tell what the 3rd connector on the left is connected to in that picture. I've got the bottom black Netplex connector wired, I just need to get the wiring for the power (and know if it's the 13 or 24 volt power the display needs).

<edit> And where the power I need comes in to the top box.

These were pics Railroad94 had posted, here is the other pic that shows the dstribution board plug (2nd 10 plug from right) and the corresponding colored wires that match the pic you have shown above  Now if you do not have the netplex/power distribution board in your S2000, then an alternative wiring is needed.

 Dan (tacman)

I believe that 3rd plug on the left is just a 2 pin molex connection for power of the actual display, which I think is 13v, but I am not certain. Tony, want to jump in here?

Title: Re: Installed Spectrum display in my S2000
Post by: Railroad94 on March 28, 2009, 10:51:02 PM
24v no no no        The bottom line is you need your netplex in the bottom connector (5) wires and 13 volt pos and neg which goes into the the 6 pin molex connector and gives power to the pcb board as pictured and then you can grab 13v + and -  from the adjacent terminals in the 6 pin connector and plug them in the lower 2 pin molex which gives power to the actual display.

Title: Re: Installed Spectrum display in my S2000
Post by: brichter on March 28, 2009, 11:10:17 PM
Lower 2 pin? You mean the 2 pin just to the left of the 6 pin in my photo?

And, on the 6 pin the power goes in the 2 left pins (pins 1 and 4) and out the 2 center pins (pins 2 and 5)? I don't have the distribution board...

The 2 pin molex alongside the 6 pin molex you leave unconnected. you use the one in the bottom corner that is by itself.

Yes  :89-,  on the 6 pin, #1 is 13vdc power in and #4 is neg in    #2 is 13vdc out and # 5 neg out.  Pin 2 &5 goes to the very bottom connector

With or without distribution board    5 netplex wires and 13vdc and you have it.

Don't forget when your all done might have to go to options and do auto config for all netplex devices

Do I understand correctly that you intend to run both a spectrum (in stand alone) and the CON2 (linked) using the 1 X 3 as a meter too?

Title: Re: Installed Spectrum display in my S2000
Post by: brichter on March 29, 2009, 03:40:14 PM

I'll start out with just a standalone to verify everything is working, then add from there.

I'm still looking at the documentation (and don't have much on the Vision/S2000/Spectrum linked setup), but one of my goals is to have the S+ and the S2000 running a linked progressive to the CON2 with the in-machine displays mirroring the amount on the 1x3. I also want to try to set up a level of standalone on each along with a linked, with the standalone amount displayed on the in-machine displays and the linked amount on the 1x3.

Not sure if that will be possible yet, but the Vision appears to have the correct options to make this possible. Under the progressive setup, it seems there are menus for both (CON Select 7.3.1 and Standalone 7.3.3) in the PSR for SG000312 (Haywire Deluxe). I don't have a PSR for SG000018 (Slot Bingo) so I'm a little unclear on the options there. But, I'm an optimist, so I'll just assume it's possible until I prove it isn't.  :71-

I haven't been able to mix and match like what you want to do.  The S+ communicates fine but if I add a S2000 the S2000 won't link up.

Let us know how you make out.

Here is mine with 2 S+ machines hooked up to my CON2, and both a 1 X 3 for the meter and a 2 X 3 for the animated graphics display.

One more photo.  The 2 X 3 alternates between about a 8 different animated graphics and the current progressive jackpot in between each animation.

I have enough parts to build another 2 X 3 but I was thinking of just expanding it to a 4 X 3.  Not sure I have enough memory in the Supreme to drive it though.

All surface mounted memory.  I have a couple of boards labeled 2 X 3 but I believe they can be used with larger displays.  The size of the memory only limits how much you can load in.  Animations take up the most memory.  I found out that these Supremes can be loaded up with still graphics too which do not take up as much of the memory.

You would think that the larger the display the more aggregate memory it would have and the more complex annimations you could develop.

Do the annimations auto-scale with the size of the display.....

This stuff just blows the Con1 toys that I have out of the water......

I think you have to get into the options settings and
change the "suffix" symbol to whatever you need.
I know it's easily changeable with Mikohn units via a couple of configuration buttons -
I'm not so sure of Spectrums.

I really am not sure.
Is there configuration buttons on the back of the display panel?
If so, use those to change the prefix symbol.
If not, then I would say that it's in the options somewhere.
Spectrum's are pretty much Netplex driven boards.
You'd need a set up manual for that...
I don't have one here at the moment.
Maybe someone that has some Spectrum documentation on hand will chime in here.

no buttons on back, only some dip switch that i think are for movement and test. For what i know this is on netplex protocol , that means that all informations are taken from the machine.. For s2000 i know only about key 17 and key 21 for setup, might there be another keychip for setting spectrum display? If not then i am out of luck :))

I have never seen a manual for these - anybody got one??  I agree - I don't think the dip switches on the back will change this.  There are no settings that I know of to modify what's displayed or how it's displayed...just starting value, maximum value, current value and how much increment %.

I do believe symbol shown depends on which Version Chip you have in the MPU.
if you have a US version chip you get the $, International Version should allow you change symbols to match that country.
I am not sure on this but it is logical.

Thanks to all for the support, I have international version chip (so i can change the currency displayed on the VFD, the US version had only dollar sign) so it is not from that version chip. during this day i will open none machine and see what base, game and version chip. and i will also open the topper to see if is there any thing else to do there.
