A friend and I just picked up another Bally slot machine !

The badge on the side says it's a E-1203, but based on
the pic's I've seen, I don't think it is.  It more looks like
a E-2203.  It has a 3 coin, 1 payline with single, double and
triple bars, blank (no symbol)  & 7's. It has an E-1000 MPU.

Here's a pic.

We are having payout issues...

What we are trying to avoid is 'chasing our tail'

Is our payout issue one of the following ???

Reels in wrong order ?  We don't think so.

Looking at the four reels strips, they are numbered 1 - 4 and are labeled
M-1241.  Reels are in their respective placement.  Test 5 shows
the different reels changing in values as you move them.

Reel strips moved by someone else ?

We don't think so, as each reel strip starts with a  "7" and are
double crimped.  Looks as if no one has messed with them.

Index wheels off on the reels ?

Looking at all four reels, the "7's" are lined up with the
index wheel in the same place.  Part # the on index wheels
is P-8225.

Here's a pic.

http://home.mchsi.com/~litterbox99/temp/reel.jpg

Wrong EPROMs on the MPU ?

Who knows... The ROMs are not labeled with the exception of
M2 (on the MPU) says 755-44.  Running test six indicates the
personality ROM is 1694.

Any help, would be nice....

What actually is the issue with your machine? Paying out on non-winning combination, or not paying when it should? Doe it pay out at all?

It pays.. The hopper runs.. and the LED displays the correct wins.

Sometimes it pays correctly acording to the reels,
but then it will pay and the reels don't jive.

@litterbox99, who is this imaginary friend you are speaking of?? Just kidding.. haha  I told you we should slow down on the drinking and smoking before we compose a forum thread. Maybe we should just start a thread with the title "Does anyone know if this game matches the personality rom 1694, otherwise I'm using it for parts"

prom is a 6 digit number or mixture of letter and numbers for non standard bally programs.  4 digits incorrect for 6 test unless he has a bad win meter

when you get an incorrect payout - you need to do a 5 test to see what the reels indicate - this will point you to the bad reel (which most likely is a bad reel reader).

We have done a test 5.

Running test 5......

Reel #1

No symbol on strip = X
Symbol on strip / Display

7 = .7
X = .
1 Bar = .4
1 Bar = .5
2 Bars = .5
3 Bars = .4

As we see, .4 & .5 will read as a Bar, 2 Bars & 3 Bars...

This can't be correct.

Reel #2

7 = .7
X = .
1 Bar = .4
2 Bar = .5
3 Bar = .6

Now this reel is consistant and unique.

Reel # 3

All over the place...

Reel # 4

7 = .7
X = .
1 Bar = .4
1 Bar = .5
2 Bar = .4
2 Bar = .5
3 Bar = .6

Weird like reel #1.  Only reel #2 looks
to be correct.  Go figure...

Based on this info, we moved reader card # 2 to position
# 1 and the patterns remained as if nothing were changed.

Last night we played this thing for at least an hour, with
the exception of payouts, it performed flawlessly.

Here's a 200 coin payout.

Here's a 100 coin payout.

http://home.mchsi.com/~litterbox99/temp/3.jpg

Reel reads...

http://home.mchsi.com/~litterbox99/temp/5.jpg

In the mean time, I'll remove the cards and clean
the bulbs, then test each of the phototransistors.

the reader control board or the wiring going to it are bad - you are getting  misreads - that will cause the wrong payouts obviously.

We swapped out another reader control board
and the problem still exists.

We looked at all the wiring, contacts and molex
connectors.  Nothing looked bad or out of order.

We looked at the reader cards and started to
ohm out the phototransistors.

http://home.mchsi.com/~litterbox99/temp/7.jpg

There were variances in all boards with respect to
the resistance with light- vs - no light.  The low
cut off seams to be around 1.3k and no light is
infinite on my 40 Meg ohm meter.

We found a few boards that had some mods.

Looks like we need a good deal on 20 or so
phototransistors ;-)

Well.. we went back to the slot machine grave yard and bought another
complete machine, almost identical to the one that was not reading the
reels correctly. Removed the MPU board on the new one and found that
it had burned traces and two of the three Eproms weren't reading properly,
but the personality prom was reading OK. (516479).

Anyway..  We swapped out the personality prom from the new machine
to the old one and now it works perfectly. The next step is to repair damaged
MPU board and clone the working machine's personality prom, eproms and bi polar
proms to the new slot machine.

The outcome is obviously two identical machines.  This grave yard of machines
that litterbox99 and I stumbled across consisted of 13 Frankenstein machines and
we have been lucky enough to salvage 4.

Just an FYI...

We knew this machine was working, except that the payout was wrong.
The card readers had no errors so I was confident that it was a software
issue because we could play this slot for hours with no problems except
for payout issues.

We bought a similar machine and swapped out the personality EPROM
from this other MPU and now it works just fine :-) !!!!
