This is really weird -  I turn on the machine and get no sound from the lcd top box - noting - zip - zilch - totally silent
I do get sound from the mpu board -  such as the spinning reel sound effect.

this is what's weird - if I go into the options and change the lcd volume it works!  Up or Down doesn't matter   Scratch Head

As soon as I change the volume it works as long as the game is on.

strange huh?

We know the LCD computer draws the sound bytes from the .wav files,
which are stored in the PCMCIA card in the LCD computer in the top slot
and matches the "triggers" in the SBxxx chip on the MPU when called for.

If it was a onboard battery problem - you'd have far worse problems such as losing memory, bios settings, etc.etc.
But the LCD is losing its volume settings? That IS very strange indeed.

When you go into the volume options, are you seeing the same volume setting
you've previously configured it for, or does it change to like zero?

Another thing  I'm suspecting is the LCD sound harness that comes out of the back of the LCD to the back-wall audio circuit card.
Maybe when you started getting the options, just the mere vibration of opening the door/shaking the machine - jolts the pin connectors in the harness connector enough to get a fresh contact in the pins?
I'd spray some "Deoxit" spray into the sound Molex housings for that sound harness to clean up the pins a little?
Maybe that'll help? At least we'll know that part of the possible problem will be eliminated.
Also, re-seat the Molex's on the audio card on the back wall...maybe spray some stuff into those as well.
It won't hurt knowing that you'll have clean pin contacts!

Going back to the 1st sentence in this post...maybe it might help to re-seat the SB chip?
Maybe one of the legs on the chip isn't fully extended into their socket clasp?
Or better yet, re-seat the PCMCIA card in the topbox LCD computer -
after all, that's where the sound bytes are?

I know YOU know these last suggestions must be done with the power "Off" -
but I'm repeating this for newer Vision owners - should they come across this post.

To answer your question -  the machine does remember the last sound setting after a restart -  so if I go from 2 to 3 then reboot its still on 3 with no sound
after reboot if I go 3 to 2 back to 3 the sound works while its on

That is unreal...I wonder what in the world causes that?

I have an Odyssey with a similar issue.
Turn it on and it has no sound.
Turn the jackpot reset key and enter the MMS setting and you get sound.
Exit to the game and it will play sounds until you turn it off.

I know your issues is with IGT, but have seen it on other platforms.
Not sure what the common denominator is? Scratch Head

I noticed while playing that sometimes -  instead of the correct reel sound for a particular reel I get 4 or 5 reel stop sounds instead!!!

(not the solenoid, I have it on electronic sound)

It was crazy I heard the stop sound 4 or 5 times really quick

 Cry Laughing

I posted this in the weird sound section -  I have two -  maybe related maybe not  rotflmao
