Never been into the music scene - Have a vague idea of what MIDI is but no idea if there is a replacement for it. Any music Guru's out there ?

MIDI = Musical Instrument Digital Interface
Allows instruments to be connected together so you can play them with another instrument
keyboard controlling electronic drums as an example
I know person that even has a Accordion with the interface that he connects to a high end synthesizer with actual samples of other instruments stored in its memory.
Many of the DJ controllers for DJ software use MIDI even when USB is the hardware interface
I use TouchOSC on my iPhone to control Traktor via WiFi
