I saw the thread about the overheating issues and I really want to make sure I keep my machine as cool as possible.  I have a 5V computer fan with a power supply pass through cable.   My top box has the original power supply in the dot screen.  Can I simply plug the fan in using this power supply or do I have to perform the ATX mod first?  I don't want to do the mod until the power supply goes bad.  If it isn't broken - don't touch it.

The power supplies on the Dot's are finicky and just adequate at best, I would just purchase a stand-alone power brick with the molex connector on it and use that.  You can get them when you buy the usb to S-ATA/IDE kits like this one:

Thanks-  That's why I asked - I don't want to damage the screen in the process of trying to prolong its life.    -   That would be very very bad.
