I wonder which is best to drill or use a punch to make another hole in
my player deck, multi-denom switch is hanging by wires on the outside of machine?

I have a bad feeling about this Foster...
I'm so afraid that as you make even a small starter punch for the drill bit -
you'll severely weaken the adhesion of the chrome plating around the punched area.
Especially if the plate metal bends from the shock of the hammer striking the punch.
Then it may further weaken as you drill it!
The only way I can see a clean hole would be is to remove
the button deck ( If possible) and block it up with
a sturdy piece of wood from behind the punch strike area so
the metal does NOT have a chance to bend...

Ever see the chrome or paint flake off of a car bumper after it's been hit?

Either way you run the risk of losing the chrome...

I have drilled a lot of Peterbilt chrome bumpers to mount a license plate and never had one peel or flake later, but only drilling a 1/4" hole. Bunker you don't have to use a punch and a 2 pound hammer to mark the starting hole, with a small drill in a drill motor, place the drill where you want the hole and rotate the drill by hand, this will cut the metal enough so the drill will not walk around when you apply power to the drill motor. now you have a pilot hole the fun part begins, hole punch ( I have never used one so no comment ) large drill ( Please don't ) large drills and thin metal don't like each other, besides where would you get a drill and drill motor that large. ( my tool box )  another choice would be a hole saw, let me warn you the hole always seems to come out larger than what you wanted, so use a smaller saw and clean the hole up with a file. another choice would be drill a 1/2 or 3/4 " hole and make it larger with files Lot of work. I would say before any drilling remove all glass and like Bunker said you need to back up the door panel with a piece of wood and a couple of C clamps. Oh I forgot I have a Plasma torch. bring it over to me and I can cut it in about 10 seconds. ( not recommended )

lol That was funny!

I agree with Buzz though...get a brand new metal hole saw bit.
( an old dull one will only heat up the metal too much)
Just big enough for the button body to slip through.

NO us a size smaller, much easier to remove a little metal with a file than try to make the hole smaller  Duh! Duh! frying pan frying pan

Whenever I make sizeable holes in metal I use Greenlee hole punches... With these you drill a teeny (Like buzz suggested first with manual turns) pilot hole, and then use a bigger bit for a larger hole. Once you have a larger hole, you then use the Greenlee punch to get the hole size you desired. You can get these at Home Depot, or electrical contractors, or online. They have a drawstud, a punch and a die, and you use a ratchet to draw them together to puch the hole in the metal. I used these for all kinds of sizes and types of holes such as DB(, DB25, DB50, AC HOLE, SQUARES, RECTANGLES, HOLES, D RING HOLES, etc. They have a die for about everything!

I posted about it here before:

What size is the hole for the buttons on the S2000?
I am thinking 3/4" or bit smaller but not sure.

Why is the knock out square or is that just a cover plate?
When all other player button holes are round.

Using a gold one depends on the price.
I would have to carefully remove the BV sign from my current deck.
It is one of those that light up when the BV is enabled.
between it and the sentry that area of door is constantly flashing.
