S 2000 4 Reel

The only reason I'm posting this is maybe it will help someone in the future. And believe me I'm going to forget some of the steps I took.

I have a 4 reel S 2000 Triple Red Hot 7s with the 10 extra play button deck. After about 6 months I acquired the right base chip from one of our members ( Thanks Dan ) So now my troubles began I kept getting a error that the machine wouldn't recognize the 10 button IO. After a bunch of hours messing with this thing I decide to exchange the complete door with wiring with another machine I have that is missing the base chip a 3 reel Moolaha S 2000  Well things didn't get any better by changing doors, and wiring.  Same error 10 button IO. Some place in the process I happened to touch the audio amp that's mounted in the top box, this thing was so HOT that I burned my finger on it. I'm not talking about warm I'm telling you this Damn thing was to hot to touch. ( there is not one thing that's looks wrong with the amp. board, no heat marks no bad traces ) Unplugged it and the buttons started working. The machine still has some issues to be addressed like the backlit doesn't work ( led panels not bulbs ) and the printer thinks it's empty when it's not. But the machine now plays, I did try reinstalling the old amp. and the button lights went out. It must have been to much electrical draw on the power supply, is the only thing I can think of.

Some progress, good! Now you did not expect it to work on the first try did you? There is no way that biatch machine would give you that satisfaction!

(Gotta spank   for moving the  on me as I went crazy thinking that I must have deleted it or something... He just moved it to a better location, probably while laughingly saying CH will go crazy and not figure it out for about 5 minutes! Now what else did he do?? )

Had you "borrowed" the backlite controller out of that particular machine, and replaced it with another?? Reason why I ask is the LED reels need a different controller for the reels also different harness I think... there is a version that does both the LED and Incandescent reels... What is the part number on your backlite controller, or do you have a picture?

I will look for a picture of the one that I am talking about as well.

Cowboy has one of those backlight controllers with dip switches too!
I've never heard of that really before.
I hope he chimes in here!

Buzz, I 'd swap that audio amp...it shouldn't ever get THAT hot.
Some transistor or triac IC component is shot and shorted.

Mark  I did swap it for another one and the replacement works fine. But wouldn't you think there would be some evidence of extreme heat on the board? It still looks brand new except where I wrote on the back BAD.

The entire metal case it's bolted to acts like a heat sink and is in
direct contact with that big black chip on the back standing up.
I'm thing maybe it was grounded out incorrectly
or something to the back wall of the cabinet?

But you seemed to have ruled it out because
you've replaced it with another and it works fine.
It's too bad you didn't note exactly
where it was it's hottest point...you would have no more skin now! lol
I had one of those multimeter's that give you temperature readings
with a little pen-like stylus sensor on the tip of it.
But the darn cheap thing never worked right.

You took some excellent pictures Buzz!  
I'd remove the four screws on the sound amplifier board
and the blackish/purple heat sink clip on the rear.

It looks a little dark in the green area I've circled.
Like a burned out trace under the board.
Something may have grounded out underneath perhaps?
That would explain the high heat and the malfunctions it was causing...

Skipper that was a good one.  I coulden't find it either.  Bunker must be the camera, I bought it from Stat.

That definately should be the correct controller. Am I correct in assuming that the reel harness is plugging into one of the black connectors on the controller? Also, are you sure that the Power connection is plugged into the controller? I converted the Tabasco machine to backlit with the Incandescent reels, and I had to dig into the wire bundle to find one plug that was not plugged in because it was burriepd deep in the bundle on the back wall of the machine. There were no lights until I plugged that in. I will have to see if I can figure out which connector that was?

I think that it was the 6 pin J3. On my Incandescent set up all 4 out the white connectors have something plugged in to them. J1-J4. I think that with an LED setup some of those are not used, and some of the black connectors are used instead... I am looking for the schematics for the board to see what they say. Don't have them.... OR... Couldn't find them!

If you need me to, I can probably manage to take a controller out of one of my working machines and send it to you for a test? (I do not have the LED reels, but I think that a machine does have a combo controller.)

ADD: Not that it will help you much, but you could test your controller in one of your working machines with Incandescent backlite. But the problem could be the LED portion of the controller, and not the other circuitry. But if it does not work that would tell you that the controller is probably bad??

I would adopt it or foster it, but I would have to check the rules about how many "slot kids" that I can have! Not to be confused with slot kits as I have way to many of those too I bet! ( I wonder if I will get a PM from "Foster?")

The amplifier board does look okay Buzz...
I wonder why it got so hot like that?
Oh well, sometimes we just never know.

I'm going to take a guess that an IC board component ( such as a triac)
shorted out inside of it's own casing and
diverted the power to the point,
where the whole metal frame the board is attached to -
began to act like a toaster oven?

Weird huh?

Guys like BillBenchTech, Channelmaniac, Robert Sult and a few others are the only ones I know that
may have the right tools and know-how to diagnose and determine which transistor went bad. 
I wish I had their knowledge of transistors...

The funny thing is: if we knew how to do that -
all we'd have to do is unsolder a .20 cent part and
drop a new one in and it would be fine...
But because we're not THAT proficient at board level repairs -
we're pretty much forced into swapping boards with working ones...
We're the guys that have to dig into our wallets!
