Caring for Custom IC's

While I'm in the midst of rebuilding my Galaga board, I thought it would be a good idea to solder all of the Midway custom IC's into new IC sockets to help eliminate the issues with oxidation and future legs breaking off.

Should I be soldering them on with machined sockets?  Will double-wipe sockets accept the round pins of machined sockets without issue?

I thought about using a double wipe sockets instead, but their pins are so flimsy.  I'm also thinking there would be poor mating of stacking double wipe on top of double wipe socket (the pins are shorter).  The machined sockets I've seen have very long strong pins.

Once you put them in a machine pin socket they will NOT come out without breaking off the pins.

If you solder it to the machine pin sockets and break a pin off the socket then it's difficult to repair.

I just clean them with Tarn-X and Q-Tips, rinse with water, and let dry overnight. Double wipe sockets and new resistor packs are installed on the boards and the chips reinserted.

This should last another 20 to 30 years.
