IGT S+ battery charge question

Ok, I have a few older Bally's that didn't need a battery (EM) but now I have an IGT S+ original 2-coin Haywire.  I had the good folks over at Westfield Slots here in Spring Texas get it up and running for me.

My question is this.  I don't want the battery to run down and give me 12 error code.  Obviously if I 'unplug' the machine the battery will not be charged.  But, if I turn off the machine with the switch in side the machine (upper right of door access hole) will the machine charge the battery or will it only charge when the machine is turned on?  Is there even a trickle charger on it?  If there is no charge or it only charges when it's turned on, how long will the battery last should I not leave it on all the time?   I would really rather not leave the machine on all the time.

The battery in a S+ is not rechargeable, but it will last many years even when the machine is off.

Not that it will ever die in my lifetime, but I put in battery holders when I replace my batteries.  It's also not that hard to put a 3.5v power supply in parallel while replacing the battery so you don't lose anything. Also I am 99% sure that if you swap the battery (without keeping it powered) BEFORE you get a error 12, you just get a CMOS error that is simple to clear. I'm pretty sure the battery voltage is measured when the machine is powered up and if it is below the threshold, the error data is written to the EEPROM at that time, and then you have to deal with clearing it.

Well the bad news is that the S+ has a Lithium battery. It does not charge.

The good news is that the S+ is fairly good on batteries.

When I purchased my slots in 2005 they were on aveage 10 years old. All appeared to have the orginal batteries.

I moved from PA to Canada in 2007 and the slots spent a year in storage.
When I moved I removed the MPU boards just in case someone tried to power up the units I could always claim they were parts machines.

When I got my basement built out and put the boards back in - all 3 came up just fine. I kind of expected an error 12 but I did not even get a 65-1 error which is common cmos miss match after a game change.

I have since replaced 1 battery on 1 slot in 2010 but have not had any issues since.

I do not keep my slots on when not in use.

Fantastic!  Thanks for the information.  The battery is new and was installed by Westfield Slots here local to me in Spring Texas.

Now I can rest easy knowing I can turn the machine off and unplug it with out fear of getting error codes!
