Hi folks!

I just have discovered my passion for coin machines and I have bought a broken Aristocrat 540.

It displays MAIN-DOOR OPEN but I think it isn't the real issue. It looks like a kind of freezed to me, because when I turn the operater key nothing happens. Additionally it shows a grapfical letter error on the display.

Manufacturing date: Aug 1996
Mainboard: MK IV / Assy 40162 / Issue B01
Interfaceboard: MK IV / 40134 / Issue G

Any clues? Is there a hard or factory reset?

Thank you very much in advance for your support!

Kind regards from Switzerland,

Leonardo

What part of Swizerland.... I used to spend some time in Fribourg.

I know more about IGT than Aristocrat ..... however most slots use door optics to control their functionality.

Optics would sense an open door, and because their frequency can be modulated via a transmitter and emitter they can't simply be bypassed via a jumper like electrical current can.

The first thing to check is if the optics align. This is an easy thing to fix.

It is possible they are damaged, in which case you need a new set.
The light is invisible to the naked eye but through the use of a digital camera you can see the emitter glow on the LCD screen.

Post back and let us know how you are making out.

Hi Jay

The optical door sensor was my first guess too. The sender IR-LED is not damaged but doesn't get any signal from the interface-board. With an external supply I can see the IR-LED glowing. In the inside of the door is another detector (push-button) for the door control, which works fine.

Strangely enough the operator key has no effect. That's why I believe the machine is frozen and it only shows the last situation on the screen. I can imagine that the problem could come from the mainboard.  Scratch Head

I will check the chips on the mainboard, maybe there is one which gets too hot or in the opposite, stays cold.

Thanks for now for your input!

Leonardo

Like most slots there should be a clear procedure. Unfortuantely I do not know enough to assist you through that process or if a key chip of some sort is required.
I am sure someone will chirp in here soon.

I used to fly into either Geneva as it was a faster train ride to Fribourg than Zurich.
I enjoyed the country closest I have gotten to your area is Inter-lochin, Junfrau and of course Bern to see the bears.

Hi Siciliano, you could try RAM clearing the machine to see if it works.

For that, turn off your MK4, then take the chip inserted in U74 out of its socket (center lower part of your board), scratch any metallic part of your machine with the chip's pins in order to short it and make it clear all of its data, then reinsert the chip in its original position carefully to avoind bent pins or putting it backwards, and turn on again.

You will get a message telling you the memory has been cleared, at this point turn your RESET switch and proceed to CLEAR ALL ACOUNTING DATA (there is a menu selection in the first page you will see once you have turned your RESET key)  Move on the menu with buttons.

You can optionally change some parameters like hopper limit and credit value  in a menu called UTILIY FUNCTION.

Also, those weird erros you get on graphics can be cleared by momentarily shortcircuiting the jumper LK23 located beside the board's battery.  For that use a screw driver or any metallic tool you have handy at that moment.

I work with the same boards and those procedures work for me most of the times.  Hope they help you getting your baby up and running soon too.

Best regards!!

The - MAIN-DOOR OPEN - problem is solved The Wave
I was finally able to clear the memory by pressing multiple times the red reset button

But... now I've got a new one - METERING ERRORangry-kitty

Referring to the manual it means battery low. There are two batteries on the board which one can found on old computer motherboards too.

As I made some bad experiences with the Dallas Chip on computers in the past, I guess this is the troublemaker. The voltage of de round CMOS battery is 3.1 Volt, which is good. And guess what...
the Dallas Chip is not in a socket - it is solded  hissy fit

But now it's time to sleep... have a good night!

You will get a message telling you the memory has been cleared,

METERING ERROR is the message I was referring to... My bad  Duh!

In order to get rid of that message perform this:

at this point turn your RESET switch and proceed to CLEAR ALL ACOUNTING DATA (there is a menu selection in the first page you will see once you have turned your RESET key)  Move on the menu with buttons.

Then, if you get weird graphics once you have exited your menu you can:

momentarily short-circuit the jumper LK23 located beside the board's battery.  For that use a screw driver or any metallic tool you have handy at that moment.rds!!

Then if you are still having troubles with metering error, I invite you to change your battery as stated in the manual you have.

Best regards.

Thank you very much for your support, SAT!

But nothing happens when I turn the reset-key respectively the Auditor-key on the outside. It should appear the service menu on the display, shouldn'it?!

Any more clues? Please don't tell me the mainboard is gone  Homer Insane

the menu should apear after turning the RESET key... If the message about metering persist, try changing the battery. I'll try to check one of our MK4 tomorrow to remember what else can be done.

That manual is for Mk5 machines... You have an older model according to the picture you posted and the board you described:  Mk4.

Get a replacement battery in the mean while if you can... Catch you later

Hi the manual  that you list is for a Mk5 540 MVP machine.
I believe the photo is of a Mk4 540 which has different architecture.
I have an Australian / New Zealand machine but they may be close enough for this reset procedure
cheers

Hello again...!
The previous owner drives me crazy Weird Eyes
It looks like he was trying to repair the machine before and was unaware what he was doing.

What I have done until now...

1. reset the memory >> pushed several times the red memory button on the frontside of the mainboard
2. plugged the Auditor-Key Cable to the correct socket (that's why it wasn't working at all)
3. reset the Metering Values >> with the door closed, power on, turn both attendant keys on, open door, press 1st 3rd red buttons on together, beginning left to right
4. hold the IR-LEDs manually together >> got the message !!! INSERT COIN !!!!

What I'm still couldn't figure out, is how the emitter and receiver are installed the proper way, because I'm still getting the MAIN-DOOR OPEN error as soon as the sensors are mounted.
Have a look at the pictures, that's how it came across. I'm not sure if it's really a light barrier or it's solved with a reflector. There is not enough space to look at the sensors when the door is nearly closed.

you're on the right track Leonardo...  The main door open trouble you're having  is likely to be those little optics.

This is what we have:

Your machine uses two types of sensors for MAIN DOOR:

- first one is the push-button you find in the lower door's corner  (you said previously it was working fine, which is very good for us now)

- and the optics couple you posted in your pictures.

Now, those optics can be sorted out by connecting an opto-switch directly to where they are normally connected (two connectors in the back panel board).

The opto-switch I'm telling you will bypass that circuitry in order to leave the machine working only with your push button.  It's a flawless solution for me because once you have it installed you forget about those optics for ever.   I really don't like machines with optics on the doors (IGTs  Duh! Duh!)

Options you can use are the 817 or the 814 opto-couplers (datasheets attached).  Any of those will be fine but I recommend you getting the 814 because it works both ways on the emitter side (easier for connecting it).

Monday I'll find some time for getting you the socket's number where those optics are connected for you to build your bypass wire.  I'll try to make a little schematic as well to avoid you solving the thing the hard way  arrow

Bye for now.

!!! Yippee !!! it works finally !!!  cheers

It wasn't necessary to mount a reflector, it just had to be installed headfirst.

But I'm already broke - it's hard to win against this machine...

What do you think is this type of slot machine worth? Don't even think I'm going to sell it, it's more curiosity, because I've paid 70.- Swiss franc which are at the moment exactly 70$ U.S. Dollar.

!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!! FOR HELPING ME REPAIR THE GRAND JACKPOT ARISTOCRAT 540 - MK4

Leonardo

p.s. You know what? Two more machines are waiting to be repaired. My wife will kill me...

Well good to know your MK4 is up and running,  CONGRATULATIONS!!!     cheers

70 USD for your MK4 is something I would call a BARGAIN for a slot machine with pending small repairs, so congrats again !!  I don't know how much would it cost actually, maybe one of the other members here could point an approximation of its price.

Thanks for posting pictures of your coins... In the first unfocused picture they seamed like big washers... that's why it was funny for me couple minutes ago, first time I see casino coins with holes.

They are still the coolest I've ever seen anyways  arrow

Best regards

Do you have a slant top or an upright?  They use different keys.  The upright uses a #5101 barrel key.  The slant top uses a #1452 barrel key.  Both use a 2341 for the reset key.

You can get the reset key from ebay, just search "slot machine reset key 2341"

I don't know of anywhere to get just the other keys, but, you can get the whole 5101 lock with keys here: http://www.tektronikenterprises.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=168.

If you have a slant top, you're kind of screwed.  I don't know anywhere to get them.  Maybe one of the vendors at the top of the page can get them. arrow

Before you go to fleaPay, you might want to place a WTB in our classified section, or you can just contact Jim at Blueridge directly (send him a pm). He should be able to get you what you need.

Want To Buy.  Just put "WTB" at the beginning of your subject. It lets everyone know at a glance that you're looking to purchase, as opposed to looking to sell or trade. Look at all the ads on the board for subject examples before you start your new thread.
