problems after the hurricane

The dog, the house and most of the slots made it through the storm in good shape, however I did lose power for about 15 hours and had two problems when it came back on yesterday.  Both problems are with my S2000 machines.

3 reel Wild Thing has no sound ?  Can I simply swap cards out with another S2000 that I know works or will I need to clear and re-key the Wild Thing ?



second problem is in a 9 line 5 reel. I have no VFD display. The machine starts up and reels reset but the display remains blank. The winner paid, credits and bet windows flash between no display and cdisplay 90.  I know the cdisplay 90 is due to the display being 5 digit and having 6 digits worth of credits.  The 9 line bet windows flash 10 (last bet) only when the door is open.

I have swapped out the VFD display in the reel glass, the VFD display board and the the ribbon cable between the VFD display and the VFD board with known working parts and have the same trouble.  I then swapped out the 9 line bet window display and put the suspected "bad" parts in another machine and they all work fine in the second machine.

What am I missing in the 9 liner that continues to cause the VFD display to fail?

On each machine I would test things in this order until you find the culprit:

Wild Thing:

1)  Swap out MMLite2 board with known working.

2)  Swap out Sound Amp in top box with known working.

3)  Swap out main computer board with known working.

4)  Swap out main power supply behind the reels with known working.

5)  Swap out power distribution box with known working.

6)  Swap out mother board with known working.

7)  Swap out speakers with known working.


5-Reel machine:

1)  Swap out main computer board with known working.

And finally a word to the wise....if you ever have a power outage, run around and unplug any machines / electronics with computer boards.  There will be a surge when the power comes back on and the surge suppressors you have them plugged into do not always do the job.

We tend to have a lot of power outages here. And when it comes back on it likes to go on/off about 3 or 4 times quickly which can play havoc with electronics. So I do two things.

First, if I'm home and power goes out, I turn off all of the breakers except for one that just has some lights on it. Then I leave one of those lights turned on so I know when power has come back on and has stabilized.

Secondly, I built some time delay relay boxes. These require the power to be on for 5 minutes before energizing. So any on/off 'glitching' before things settle down will keep resetting them and keep them from turning on until things have stabalized. I have these on my refrigerator (newer model that is is all 'computer' controlled and I had 2 boards previously get ruined from this glitching). Also my TVs and computers, even though they are on UPSs.

A couple years ago I had lightning actualy hit the transformer on the pole behind my house and it fryed everything now I unplug all my valuable stuff when the big storms hit. and every power outage is followed by a powre spike so definately un plug or turn off brakers when it goes out if its possible. surge protecters help but dont count on them.

For about $300 you can get a lightning rod and a surge protector wired into your breaker panel. Depending on where you get them they come with $5K worth of coverage for any electronics damage.
