Slot Machine Power Pigs

Just an interesting side note for those of you who are power contcious -

I have a large 1500W UPS for my machines and it has a display that shows the current power consumption - I was surprised to find the following:

A reel touch machine fully light and booted was drawing 160W of power -  I disconnected the power input to the fluorescent light on the reel glass and belly glass and the power consumption stayed the same at 160W - 

I double checked that the light was fully disconnected - i.e. the ballast and transformer had no power and sure enough they were physically unplugged from the power supply.

I find this disappointing

It's got to be the additional ps in the topbox computer and screen. How may watts does a standard S2000 draw at idle?

I'm not worried about the top box -  I mean that's going to cost - whatever it's going to cost

What I am concerned about is this -  UNPLUGGING OR PLUGGING the fluorescent lights makes no difference in the power consumption -  this is bad news for me  -  i was under the misconception that disconnecting the lights would save power hence saving $$

The power supply in these boxes must suck up as much power as they are rated for regardless of the load??   

Light on or lights off costs the same amount of WATTS

Oh, I see what you're saying. Yeah, I would of thought having the lights off would help to, at least by 60 watts or so and somewhere around 45 on a standard game

- Bally 6000
- Reel Touch

When I power them on they draw 700 WATTS

If I could knock that down some I'd be really happy  -  now I usually only turn on the game I want to play.

If I could knock that down some I'd be really happy  -  now I usually only turn on the game I want to play.

I have an idea as to how you could cut down the power consumption considerably, but I get the feeling you are not going to send me your Blue Bird!!!

Plus the shipping cost would dwarf the power costs!

Do you do the same test with the Bally 6000 or the Game Kings. I'd be curious if you got the same results.

I wonder what the wattage is without the top box computer on a s2000 I am guessing the top box computer/display uses 40-60 watts.
Also see if the consumption goes up on reel games when being played.

The meter must not be very accurate. There has to be a change. You are drawing another 30 watts or so or with the bulbs, so it HAS to change the actual consumption.

it doesn't that's what surprises me .   I checked and double checked

no difference

the ups was expensive too ~ $400

Munch, you could always put an ammeter in line with the machine and check it that way. I'd trust that reading more than the one from the UPS, myself.

Here's another thought that probably won't help. My old spa uses about 5500 watts when the heater is on. What's 700 watts compared to that, especially when it gives you five great machines to choose from?
