Happiness in life is a great dog

« on: February 22, 2012, 10:53:59 PM »

Hi All, I've got the above listed error on one of my machines and can't seem to get it to clear. It's a 3 reel that I'd been using a jumpered 5 reel harness on. I ordered a 3 reel harness from one of our members on ebay and after I installed it it reset to this error. I didn't swap reel controllers origionally, but I have in succesive failed attempts to clear the error. I'm back to the origional controller and 5 reel harness, but still getting the error. One other thing I should note, the door optics are bypassed on this machine and when I open and close the door the machine doesn't reset. If I turn the key or push the reset button to accounting menu, it doesn't clear when I close the door. I have to push the max bet button to go back. Does anyone have any ideas on what might have happened here? Machine is set up for tokens only, no BV or printer installed. Thanks for any and all help yes

You need to physically undo the door bypass ground wire momentarily.
It sounds like a stuck logic signal which is related to the hopper optics.
All of the optic signals are related in the machines.
Sometimes you can get the stuck optic signal "unstuck" by simply undoing
the tied cash door wires for a second then tying them back up.

Or

perform a clear.

I just ran a clear chip and when I get to where it says to close the main door it doesn't recognize it as closed

Try a different board. I had one that did that and it was the board . If it is a optic problem it will still be there  , BE sure the molex connectors are plugged in good on the back plain board behind the CPU tray. that's were the optics plug into

Which board? I've replaced both the backlit and cabinet IO boards on the assumption that something I did killed one or the other when I swapped reel harness'

Ok, tried that and got a repeating system error message that wouldn't clear. I've got the origional board back in and now at least I'm getting a reels diconected error instead. I found a door optics plug that must not have been locked together. Now I'm not getting any power to the reel controller though

I wouldn't have thought there was any harm in plugging a 3 reel harness into a 5 reel backlight controller. Was I wrong? I think I'll pull it apart tommorow and try swapping motherboards. That's the only reason I can think of that I would have a reels disconnected error as the machine really doesn't care if there's a backlight controller or not.

Thanks to Bunker and Plungerboy for the leads. Turned out that, ultimately, a little rest, patience and following those suggestions lead to the fix. K+ to you both applause

Hey cowboy! That's great!  Dancing Party
I so glad you figured it out!! yes
I agree with ya - patience is the key.
You really gotta dig Sherlock Smiley around sometimes.
Working on the machines late at night never works for me - I try to just play 'em instead!

What was the problem in the end?

After I went in and set all the periferals up the way I wanted (3 reel harness and controller), checked that everything was plugged tight and tied everything down securely I was still getting the reels diconnected error, so I ran a clear and key procedure and the reels worked. After that it was just a matter of resetting all the parameters for sound and limits and off she went. Ultimately what I found was that plug I mentioned in an earlier post and a loose ribbon cable between the motherboard and power distribution board. You talking about opening the ground on the door optics led to that otherwise it looked just like a couple extra dangely plugs which there are a few of in these machines. Plungers suggestion of replacing the MPU led to the clear that led to another board change that led to another clear that put the last piece of the puzzle in. Mother nature had a hand in it to. We had 70 mph winds all day yesterday and the power went out at around 2040 last night forcing me to give it up for the night and go to bed. Luck shows up in mysterious ways sometimes I guess yes

Ah good!  yes
I'm glad you didn't go about swapping a backplane - too many connectors in that puppy!   arrow

I swapped to a 5-button deck last week from a 10-button deck - I must of been on drugs...lol

Lol, that might be part of my problem. We switch from the 12hr day to 12hr night shifts pretty regularly so I use ambien to make the adjustment. I sometimes neglect to go right to bed after I take those:( For the observant on this site I leave telltale clues to when that happens and have to go back and adjust my profile the next day or whenever I happen to notice what I did bust gut laughing Part of the price of shiftwork I guess
