what's the best way to get into the slant top when the lock no longer engages the mechanism? I was going to drill out the lock and try to access it through the lock.

What mechanism? And feel free to drill out the lock...if you don't have a key, then drill it.....you have no choice...

After drill out, you can replace the lock....don't be messy on you're drill out..you will need to install a new lock in that same hole.....
