Summit anyone?

Knowing nothing about slots, I purchased a Summit in non-working order. Seems like no one really likes these machines, but after a great deal of persistence, I managed to get it working 100%. Actually, it's a nice playing machine with Ike dollars.

Don't know what all the fuss is about. Once you really understand how it works, it's not much different than a Bally. It even has sound, although one of the three sounds is not wired into anything. So, after some modifications, I got the "reel spinning" sound to work with the machine. Only downside is, it's a dollar machine and gets expensive to fill that hopper with coins. So even if it's a worthless machine, it's got some value...

The machine was not functional when I got it. Had to drill the lock out, and it had 155 IKE dollars in the hopper! So I broke even...

On the MPU board, there was a dead battery and a bad Opto chip. Then the interface board had four bad components (Opto chips and TRIAC's). Hopper switch wasn't working properly, and the coin wheel was frozen. Coin door solenoids all out of whack. Speaker was burned out. Finally the reel mechanism needed some oil.

Fixed all that, got a diagnosis chip that replaces the EPROM, and everything else fell into place. Works perfectly. I had to supplement the coin stash to have enough coins to play and win.

Then I modded the sound board so it would play a sound during reel spin. The sound is programmed in the board but didn't have any connection to the machine.  So now it's my favorite game room machine...!

Did the diagnostic chip help much with the troubleshooting ? I have a summit machine with a coin in error. I replaced the coin in switch and still get the error. I also bought a replacement slot controller board due to the other one having corrosion but that did not help. The guy from HMS said it might be the ILQ-74 chip to send it to him and he would test it. He ended up replacing that board but the problem is still there. It is a mechanical not electronic comparator.

Diagnostic chip helped a great deal. You are able to test all the functions of the machine.

The ILQ74 is a big problem with those machines; I had two go out, with the same "coin in" problem. My machine has the same coin acceptor as yours.

In fact, I finally put a socket in its place and bought a handful of them from www.mouser.com where they're less than $3.

I wouldn't be surprised that the new CPU has a failed chip. That design could use a modification for the opto isolator.

As long as your game EPROM is good, the chip change should work for you. Here's a rundown of the component locations on your interface card. This could point to a problem as well:

Also, check the backplane board for corrosion that might have leached into the CPU edge connector.
