Few things are better than fixing an old game...

WWW
« on: November 25, 2009, 10:59:10 PM »

Hey everyone,

I picked up 2 units... one fairly complete and one for parts. The parts one has no motherboard, power supply, I/O card, etc... The fairly complete one seems to be missing a power supply.

I had an older AT minitower power supply and installed it. It fires up but is dead. I have the right voltages to the board but I don't even get a BIOS splash screen. I removed the I/O card from the board and it was still the same: All powered up but nobody is home.

It's running the telcovision 486PL Rev 3A board with the riser card and the big I/O board.

Any idea besides replace the CPU and/or motherboard?

The CPU is an oddball AMD 486DE2-66V8TGC which seems to be a 3.3v version of the CPU. The board is set for a 3.3v CPU and the fan is working... but that's it.

Thanks!

Digging further I see that the CPU was clocked to 50MHz... If this is an X2 clock multiplier then the CPU was running 100MHz and may have burned out.

Also, the tag RAM was bad. I replaced it and reclocked the CPU to 33MHz... but it's still dead.

I have very little in it... it'd make a decent game for my 89yr old stepdad to play.

It's ALIVE...

Well, sort-of. The bad tag RAM was -12... a -15 was too slow and it was locking up. I searched and searched then found a -12 to put in it (12ns) and it's booting now.

Monitor works, it passes all start up stuff... finds the touch screen, all drivers load, then I'm stuck with:

Invalid Key for version PG3004-01 V2.01 (11/27/01)!!!

I have a button key in it, but it's not working. It's SA3046-01 R00 which is supposed to be the right version for Double Platinum HD (PG3004-01 v2.01). What's next to do to resolve this?

FIXED!

Scrubbed the riser card, security button socket, and the I/O card contacts with a pink pencil eraser then scrubbed the hell out of the I/O board with Formula 409 Orange. It was NASTY covered with tar/nicotine... 15 min in the oven at 170 to dry...

Reassembled and BINGO. It came up and reset the NVRAM... then came right up to play!

I guess I'm a certified perv since I scored slightly less than 750,000 points on the sex trivia.  excessive drool

Thanks!

I've never worked on one before and have learned A LOT from it.

I need a blanking plate cover for the hole under the coin slot, a fan, and some locks. I'll pick up some locks from Home Debit tomorrow and I should have a fan somewhere around here.

Looks like I won't be taking it to the parents house after all. I figured out how to turn off the nudity and calibrate everything, but it's too difficult to get the bar smell out.

Well,

Good news & bad news... The 5/16" "mailbox locks" from Home Depot fit perfectly for the side lock and they work fine for the back door but you have to use the old bar from the back of the lock. Bad news? The 9/16" one works for the coin box lock, but the Z shaped bar requires quite a bit of rework to make it fit into the slot.

It took a vise, hammer, punch, and lineman's pliers to bend it into a shape that didn't stick out so deep that it didn't line up to the slot in the box, but it's done! The 5/16" panel locks are keyed alike, but I couldn't find a matching key for the coin box lock. Oh well.

Now all I need is a metal panel to fit over where the DBV was so I can slap in a credit switch... unless someone knows a free play mode. I can't seem to find one for it. Well, in any case, it still needs the metal panel since there's no DBV in it.

All that's left after that is to pick up a replacement fan tomorrow.

RJ

PS: By the way, they changed the shape of the same locks from Lowe's and they are slightly bigger now. They wouldn't fit in the holes!

Freeplay should be accessed in the setup menu, at least it is on my Titanium.

Several helpful manuals can be found for free on the Merit website:

Agreed, the few Megatouches I've worked on all allowed a freeplay mode which was set up in the menu.

I don't know if it'd make a difference, but perhaps make sure that there aren't any credits on it before you enter the menu to enable freeplay?

To get rid of the smokey, bar smell...
place a nice aroma wick on the floor in the machine.
Might make your house smell nicer too!

If you want to stop the questions you can setup a small shrine inside with a IGT mug and a budda, just make sure you make room by removing the hopper first. When you light the inscence stick start chanting to slot gods for a good hit  rotflmao
