110VAC/220VAC

From the welcome wagon thread a new member Lars stated he bought 5 machines that are sit up for 110VAC and being in the Netherlands they use 220VAC. So being pretty early in the morning here and my trying to think is a real strain. What little I know about AC electricty is shocking but here goes. in this country don't we use two 110 wires and a common wire ( ground ) to get 220VAC  My question is, is this the way it's done overseas, and if it is could you NOT hook up one of the 110 wires coming from the wall plug  to the machine.

For S+'s, the europeans need a different cord to the power supply box.
Then they have to move a separate 110VAC wire down on the power supply floor
to contact the normally used 110VAC wire in the bus box.
From there, the machine is then set for 220VAC.
I don't have that particular wire at the moment or on hand here at home
but I think it's the middle wire coming off the transformer and I think it's purple.
It can be very easily checked with a multimeter when power is turned on.
Everything else remains the same as the S+ power supply dumbs the 220VAC
down to what we normally use here in the North America.
I actually cut that wire here because I don't want an errant coin dropping into
the top right side of the power supply box and falling into the right place.
Why IGT left a 1/2 inch gap on top of their power supplies when
thousands of coins are falling around is beyond me.

I guess you could say that their design was short sighted , to coin a phrase.
