Did you take the reel strip off the reel or take the whole reel off the motor?

There should be a notch near the end of the strip that will line up with a key on the reel

With your fingers on the outside of the tracks of the basket (where the reel strip lays), spin the reel a full rotation and feel for a little bump. Then do the same with your fingers on the inside of the track. Can also be found by holding the reel strip (as if you were going to install it in the basket) at a 45 degree angle, and spin the reel slowly a full rotation. Go slowly so that you can detect the little bump. When you find this bump, that is where the notch on the bottom of the reel strip goes to be correctly aligned.

Not sure if Bally was nice enough to do this, but IGT reel baskets have the little dot/bumps on the "rim" of the basket.
