Author Topic: Jennings 400 blows 3rd fuse  (Read 3971 times)

I recently acquired a Jennings 400 3 pay nickel(5c) machine and it was working fine until it seems to blow the third fuse which I think is rated at 4amps (although the machne has 3 fuses in it rated at 5 amps)  When I hit the on switch after putting in a new fuse it immediately blows the new fuse.  I live remote from a ready repair facility, so I am soliciting your expertise.  Anyone have any ideas about the cause?  It seemed to have happened after my granddaughters hit a couple of big payouts while playing on the machine and there was a slight electrical odor afterwards.

From the behavior you described it sounds like rust or corrosion that is creating a short somewhere. It is an Electro-Mechanical  so maybe a reel board or sensor is shorted. I will however defer to the real EM experts on here.

I would suggest pulling out the hopper and disconnecting components.
Then install a new fuse and power it back up. If the fuse doesn't blow, then start plugging things back in until it does.
At that point, the last item plugged in should be the issue.

I know one of the first things I do when I get an older machine in is to inspect the power cords. The way they are run in under the bottoms of these type of machines they get flattened and torn causing a direct short... I do agree with Neonkiss with the pulling the hopper and or reel assembly before you power it on the next time with a new fuse. If it still blows you know that they are not the problems, if it doesn't put one in at a time till you figure out where the problem is.. Look around inside once you have everything out, you could have a stray coin or two floating around in the machine causing your short.. Good luck and keep us posted..

Ok, I'm back. I will have to pull out my 400 in the garage to see what that fuse is, but I will look and give you an opinion tomorrow.
