847 POSSIBLE PURCHASE ADVICE------------------- UPDATED

Greetings Group:

I have the opportunity to pick up a 10 cent 847 Continental from a guy who is kind of local.  (No shipping)  He has owned the machine for about 10 years.  It played well for most of the time, you all know the story, but surprise, when I came over to check it out coins would not register when dropped in the door slot.  The handle does not release.  On occasion the coin just drops into the tray in the door.  When I hit the trip wire on the inside of the door  SOMETIMES it works correctly.  Also the huge feature glass is broken on the lower right hand corner.  Barry does not have one,  I asked him already.  Any ideas where to get one of these?  The machine is relatively clean on the inside and out.  I would give it a 7.5 in that category.  The machine can be had as is for around $350.  I tried to attach a picture of the machine.  I hope it worked.  What are your collective thoughts.

Since the experts on the group all seem to agree that $350 is a bit much for this machine I took some advice and offered $250.  We agreed on $275 IF I would like to proceed with the purchase.  I told him that I would reply by Wednesday.  I guess that is a good thing.  I will check as best as possible that the payout is correct,  the step up works properly and other things that in my limited experience seems to be common problems. 

FYI I am located on the North East coast where any machine is harder to find that the South West and West Coast.  Also I am in a 30 year state.  I will only buy what can be legally possessed. 

Thanks so much for the link for the glass.  $200 is way more than I anticipated.  I will have to look at many other sources before I go for that number.  As a matter of fact,  the crack is looking a lot more like a character mark since I got that price! lol  I  will contact all of the leads this week and see what I can come up with.

I've always liked the Continental and Super Continental, but they are the most complicated EMs out there. If Barry doesn't have the glass, you could try Larry at LA Slots, although the last time I dealt with him regarding EMs was more than 10 years ago. He might not carry them anymore. If he doesn't, the glass will be hard to come by. On the other hand, that crack is small and not too obtrusive, and the rest of the machine's outsides look very clean.

I'll defer to our EM experts, but my feeling is that if you're not well versed in fixing EMs, this one might be too much to handle (no pun intended, but hey! )

Again, I have to defer to others about price, but if the glass is broken and it's not fully operational, I think that $350 is high. I could be wrong here.

<ADD> 10¢ machines tend to be more rare, but one of the reasons for that is that they are noted for having more issues with coin in/out due to the small size and light weight of the dimes.

Hi... You could check with Squires And Corrie Slot machines.. I contacted them for a belly glass for a Continental but that was a no go... I forgot that they're still around. I visited their shop and got a tour sometime back in the '80's (I think), when I lived in the area and was in the market for an older mechanical slot.

This is just my "IMHO" feedback - and you get what you pay for.... so this is not meant to draw offense to EM lovers....just my 2c so feel free to ignore.....

I don't know what EMs go for but when I can get a working S2000 for $250.00 it seems mighty steep.

With the more contemporary games you can change up the themes, readily get parts, add progressives, convert them into video slots, add bonus games.... yada yada.

This would need to be a labor of love like restoring an old MG automobile.......that contentinal seem like a 1970's Lincon.... It might be Americana but its never going to be considered a classic or a signficant piece. If I was going to go for an EM I would probably be more interested in a Bally....

If I wanted a mechanical I would be more interested in the stuff that Monte Slots was showcasing .... which is old school.

Awww, a little superglue and some fine sandpaper/steel wool and it'll be near perfect.

I did think about the super glue idea while still looking for a feature glass.  Also I see that Barry has a Spanish language 847 glass for sale.  I thought that perhaps I could buy the Spanish one and have a glass place cut off the Spanish on the top and add the English from this glass.  They probably cloud join the pieces more seamlessly that I could.  What are your thoughts?

You could probably cut out the spainish part, and paste on the English, but I've never had much luck with that as it always seems to show up any little mistake in cutting.  You'll need a good sharp xacto, a straight edge, and a sharp razor blade. You've got a couple of layers to go through, and if the glass is old, it's liable to chip the paint a little bit if your blade is not good and sharp.  Made custom glass inserts before, and they turned out ok, but not pristine.
Sure wish I'd saved all the old glass I had my grubby hands on over the years....

Thanks for the heads up.  I will leave the cut and paste project alone.  Seems crazy glue is the way to go.  I wish you would have saved your old glass also.  If you know who has one please put them in touch with me.  I will keep the list posted.  Thanks soooo much.  TW
