I'm totally a novice on slot machines.  Got a Bally 5000 on impulse at an auction about 5 years ago.  Worked fine for a long time.  Now the black power supply is intermittent.  However, when the power supply IS working, the place bet lights don't light up, and quarters don't fit into the slot anymore.  The coin slot seems to be blocked by a black sliding mechanism the coin must pass.  Also, is there a resource that explains the reset buttons on the circuit boards, and also the buttons on the coin bin down below?  I did check and the lithium battery on the lower board is still good.  I've read snippets of ram resets, etc, on here.  But there doesn't seem to be a place that pulls all the basic info together in one place.  I can post pictures if needed.  This is not a video machine.  There are 3 reels.

Sounds like you are having the same issues as I am having with my 5000. I think I've gotten mine pinned down to the power supply as the culprit, it can cause a lot of strange things to happen. Depending on what year your slot chips were made in, you can either get Ram clear chips (if they are pre-1993) or supposedly just dislodging the top board (where the two cables are connected) before turning on the machine and then holding down the pseudo coin in button (on the door) until a reset occurs. I never could get that to work but I don't think I was getting enough power through the power supply to get anything to function correctly.

Hope that helps, I put mine away for a while after getting frustrated with it. I might have to get it back out and tinker with it after seeing someone else with issues.

Hi, thanks for your response, and the information contained therein.  Here's where I'm at with this slot machine now.  I am bench troubleshooting the old black power supply.  I've desoldered and checked every cap, inductor, transistor, rectifier, and the larger diodes.  I haven't check the millions of small diodes.  I also need to check the triacs...those I think could be a likely cause.  Meanwhile, I bought a whole new power supply with 5, 12, and 24 volt outputs.  Haven't had time to try that one yet.

While the old supply WAS working (remember it was intermittent), I tried holding down the coin button (inside the front door) and something did happen to the error codes.  But before I had much of a chance to investigate, the power supply failed again.

Now, for the ram reset, are you talking about completely removing the entire top board before the power-up?  That board just unplugs from a backplane board.  OR, are you talking about just removing some connectors?  there are some ribbon connectors at the front.

Also, what is the deal with that keypad some folks talk about?  Is that really neccessary to have after ram reset, just to use the slot in a basic way?

Also, what do the buttons (and leds) do on the bottom board?  Thanks thanks thanks....

I guess since the money is gone from the slot machine market (how do you spell r-e-c-e-s-s-i-o-n?), not as many people are working on the machines, or reading these forums...

Where did you find a power supply that had a 24 volt output? I thought about using an old computer power supply but would have to find a 2nd one for the 24 volt piece that goes to the hopper.

From what I've read you just have to pull it away from the board in the back, it not being connected to that board supposedly triggers a ram clear

I've never had my slot in a fully functional state yet so I really don't know but from what I've read you have to have it in order to make the game play like it was originally intended to.

they supposedly reset something on the cpu. the woman I bought my slot machine from said that any time she would get an error in the past, she could push those two buttons on the board and it would start working again. I think that was before the power supply finally gave out.

yeah i've been trying to find someone in the northern kentucky/cincinnati area to look at it for some time now and never had any luck. Hopefully you get yours working, I'd be curious to hear of the outcome of yours. Maybe it will help me get motivated to fix mine  Nerd

Here's a link to the power supply.  I haven't tried it yet, so I hope it will handle all the loads.

Forget this power supply on Ebay.  Just got around to trying it out.  First, they sent me the wrong one.  They sent an IPV REL-110-4008 instead of the ...4006.  Also, there's no common pin from which to get all the voltages referenced.  I think the 5v would be ok with that, but not the 12, -12, and 24v.  They seem to be isolated supplies.

FYI, I actually FIXED my Bally 5000plus (non video) slot's BLACK POWER SUPPLY!  Yah!  It took a lot of persistance, working, stopping, then going back to it.  What is needed is a way to narrow things down quickly, and this was really stupid simple.  Don't know why I didn't try it sooner.  On the bench, I plugged in the not-working infamous BLACK POWER SUPPLY and I used a paint stripper to heat various areas of the open board until one area started it working.  OK, now we're talking narrowing things down to about 1/4 of the entire board area.  It's a start!  So I let the board cool off, plugged it back in, and used a 100W soldering iron to INDIVIDUALLY heat components until I got a reading on the DVM.  It turned out to be the cap shown in the uploaded picture.  So I replaced it with one pirated from an old TV circuit board.  Now the power supply works well every time I plug it in.  Next stop, put it back into the slot machine and try to get this reset nonsense working.

If anyone has any instructional info on how to reset these things, and if I need that keypad just to get the slot working in a basic way, I'd appreciate you sharing.  Thanks.

OK, power supply is in the slot machine, and works.  But the machine won't accept a coin, the green bet light on front panel doesn't light up, and the bottom LED display shows 2 coins bet.  When I press the push button inside the front door, right next to the "disable coin mech" switch ,the reels all spin and stop.  The disable coin mech switch is pushed back (to NOT disable the coin mech).  I really have no idea what these buttons are for, including the "reset buttons" on the bottom circuit board (the one with all the eproms).  Also, what is the role of the key switch on the machine's right side?  I tried to get a manual for this thing, but no one seems to have one.  Is there a PDF online somewhere?

If you can find a soft copy of a manual, I'd love a copy of it as well. I can't seem to find anyone that has one. I've found a hard copy of it that I'm trying to purchase but still working out the details on it.

I'm glad to hear you got your power supply working again. Maybe there is hope for mine after all  Clap

Update.  REAL PROGRESS TODAY.  Basically, the slot machine is reassembled and working now!  Awesome!

I learned how to place a sample coin in the coin comparator by trial and error.  It wasn't really obvious.  Once that was done, a lot of issues cleared up.  Only two defects now are the right reel, every once in a while, continues to run.  On and on.  Sometimes I can get it to stop by playing with the connector to the top board.  That doesn't always work.  I took out the encoder IR led board and cleaned them of cig smoke.  No help there.

One thing I did learn...the machine gets mad when you press the reset button when you have the door open button clamped (and the door open).

Also, one of my front button lamps is burnt out.  They are about 3.5 ohms...not sure of the wattage.  The lamp (it is NOT an LED) is nested in a tiny plastic twist bayonet holder.  Anyone know a source for these?

The flourescent light tube doesn't work above the reels.
