91 is for the 1st reel - you may have a lubrication issue - try running the game in 8 test mode - door open - see if the reels stop correctly.

okay then lock and close the door - meter should change to 50 000 or 71 000 - play a coin  - make sure the ribbon cable is not rubbing on the 1st reel.

i appreciate the help and i know i may not be clear in the discription of the events.when a tilt occurs,a key switch on the right side of the machine must be activated to get a tilt code. in this case a 91 (position error) after which i started this thread because i didn't know where to look for the cause. i hope this clears things up somewhat.  bill

the key switch you refer to - is this on the side of the cabinet below the handle?   not sure why you are turning a key to get a tilt code - that is not how it is done.  with the door locked and closed - you should have a 50 000 or a 71 000 on the win meter - when you play 1 coin the win meter will change to 1 000.   when you get a tilt the win meter will show the 2 digit error code on the left side of the win meter - followed by the 1 000.   you do not have to turn anything.
when you played the machine in 8 mode - win meter 80 000 - using the coin switch on the door - machine plays fine?
you played it  in 8 mode for 10 or more times?
now close and lock the door - does the win meter change to 50 000 or 71 000?
if yes - play a coin.
what happens after you pull the handle?

i wonder if we are talking about different machines, mine is a bally E-2226-5 slot. when powered-up, win meter shows 50 .0.00 after playing a coin it goes to 50 000 and stays there, no change when a coin is played. only time it changes is to indicate a amount won in the last 2 or 3 spaces.i simulated a tilt by holding the coin switch lever down.meter stayed at 50 000 until i activated the key switch, then it showed 20 000 alternating with 0 000 which indicates "coin switch jam". after pushing reset, meter reads 50 .0.00,after playing a coin it goes back to 50 000. the door loched contacts and door open contacts have been by-passed to indicate the door is always closed and locked

50 000 or 71 000 is the door closed last message depending on it being a New Jersey or Vegas game - if the code does not change to 1 000 when you play a coin - then you have a problem with your door hinge switch and/or the lock micro switch.

the door lock micro switch is missing and wires tied togeather also the hinge switch wires have been tied togeather ,this should simulate the door being shut and locked at all times. this has been the case since i got the machine and the 91 code just appeared recently.where should i look for a problem?  thanks  bill

if the wires are tied together then you shouldn't be able to run any tests.  the wires at the lock being tied together is a standard mod - tying the grey wire with the grey/brown is not.  If the wires are in fact tied together then you would not get a 50 or 71 code.  so you have an issue with the wiring - the 50 code staying is telling you that the door is not locked and closed - that is why you are getting the 91 code.

i really appreciate your input and i did reactivate the hinge switch. the display now functions as you said it should, however, i still get a code 91 occasionally and still don't know where to look for the problem. thanks  bill
