version eprom crc error 0xF002

I started getting "CALL ATTENDANT" error code.  When I open the door I get the "system error" followed by "version eprom crc error 0xF002" error, after clearing all errors with jackpot key I'm prompted to close main door.  As soon as door is closed "Initializing" flashes on screen for a split second and then "CALL ATTENDANT"

I performed a complete ramclear and the it worked properly until it set idle for about an hour with power on.  I believe the problem started right after the "attract" noise was played.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Check the power supply behind the reels.

Re-seat the power supply.

Replace the Version EPROM (VSXxxxxx) on the MPU board.  First try to re-seat it

Or you can fiddle around with the power supply but if that fixes it I will buy Foster Lunch (via paypal).

Slotmaster, I think you were right, I removed the chip and then reseated it, everything seems OK for now.  I'll leave it on for a few hours and see what happens. 
What does the Version chip control?

Denominations that are available, jurisdictional settings, money/currency symbols.

From what we care about it controls the Multi-denom capability (Split Screen which many call it).  If you use the one with the SD you get the scrolling credit screen, if you use the MD version of it you get the split screen with the $.  

Really it's the chip that tells the machine which state it's being used in and the limits associated (Including MD or SD) as foster points out.

Computer geekery here -- warning, warning!   

CRC stands for "cyclic redundancy check".  It's an error checking method and essentially compares a checksum that the chip should have versus what is being read -- more or less the same deal with looking at a checksum when you burn an EPROM.

The machine was saying that the CRC failed -- it was having trouble reading or getting the accurate information from the chip.  The causes of that could be a corrupted chip, or a chip that isn't quite seated properly.  In your case it was the latter, and as you observed the issue didn't happen until it tried to play an attract sound -- likely the part that wasn't making a good connection was related to that, or needed to access that part of the chip.
