Police warn of cell phone-based account scam

Contributed

BULLHEAD CITY - Bullhead City Police are warning the public about a phone text message scam.

On Dec. 10, a Bullhead City resident notified the Police Department that he'd received a text message on his cell phone that told him he needed to verify his U.S. bank account and to call a 1-866 phone number.

Fortunately, the resident suspected it was a scam. He called the phone number and an automated voice asked him to type in his credit or debit card number. The man typed in 16 random numbers and was then asked for his personalized pin number. The man typed in four random numbers. The automated voice then thanked him and disconnected the phone line.

The Bullhead City Police Department would like to remind residents to never give out personal information, including bank account and social security information, over the phone, Internet or by mail unless you initiated the contact with the person or company. Be aware of “phishing” scams, where someone pretends to be from a legitimate organization and asks for personal information for verification purposes.
