Game King (Cooling fan with LCD)

So, my Game King is about to undergo some cosmetic surgery with a Wells Gardner LCD implant.  Do these things get very hot compared to a CRT?  Is it still wise to keep a fan blowing inside of these if one is using an LCD?

Opinions would be appreciated.

Any fans that are in place already, just keep them in place. It couldn't hurt

The original fan that was put in there was to disapate the heat generated by a CRT.
There is a common issue with these fans being very noisy and if there is an LCD in the cabinet it shouldnt be neccesary.
I actually did a temperature test with fan on and off. 6 hrs off and 6hrs on  produced a 5 degree difference.

Ok, but oiling the fan and re-installing should quiet it down and with a resistor in place, the fan could be quieted even more. But your point is well taken.

It would be nice to eliminate one fan if possible.  There's also a tiny fan by the MPU.  My exhaust fan is about a quiet as it can get.

I keep ALL the fans in my S 2000s in place             BUT UNPLUGED

I disconnected all the fans on my 17" GK/I-games after upgrading them from CRT to LCDs with the exception of the MPU fan behind the BV.  I haven't had any probems with it at all, but it's only on for probably 6 - 8 hrs at any one time, and I also replaced the fluorescent tubes out with LED tubes.  They run quiet and cool.

Here's a thought. If all your machines sit on the same table, diconnect all the fans and run a small squirrel cage fan through a branched pipe system to all the hopper overflow holes in the bottom of the machines. Like central air

Need to clarify something here in case someone happens along and reads this for answers.

Yoeddy...you have a 19-Pin machine...so unless it was converted, you have only one fan at the mid-level on the sidewall to the left, one at the MPU, and possibly one in the top box (some flat tops don't have them).

And Ratspot, you have a 25-Pin machine...which means you have everything listed above, and one additional fan potentially at the mid-level, on the back wall directly behind the monitor.


Fans are important...keeping components cool is always important to insure they last as long as possible.  My pattern when shopping this platform out is always this:

On the 19-pin, I keep all the original fans, however in some cases, if the top box fan is missing, I don't worry about it because there is nothing up there too important or too expensive to replace if I need to.

On the 25-pin, if it has a CRT, I definitely keep the MPU fan, and both mid-level fans operational.  The digital monitors throw off a lot of heat.  If it gets a LCD replacement, then typically I remove the secondary middle fan as it really doesn't seem necessary.  But then again, it really doesn't hurt anything either.

do not remove the fans! If you do  and you get odd board problems you are overheating. these boards are subject to problems when they overheat. the cure is to replace the mpu fan.
