I tried separating a dual display last year PB.
Physically it can be separated easily but I cannot remember whether or not I was able to get a single display working by itself.
I had wanted to use the smaller one for a progressive display on another area of my s2000 for some reason
but I didn't go through with it because the display wasn't the correct size for what I wanted to do.
I ended up putting it back together and saving it for another day...

As far as the Netplex cabling...I believe some of the wires in the cables are carrying power to the display
while other wires are transmitting data along their lines.
Similar to the Netplex cables that are used in other peripherals such as a ticket printer, a vision LCD monitor, or a bonus wheel/reel.
Yours would plug into the Netplex Power Distribution board.

I would have to dig it all out to see if it could be done or not.
What I don't understand is why you want to separate it but that's not important.
Whether it can be done or not depends on which display you want to use and
I think the main progressive circuitry board lies with the larger display - I, of course, can be dead wrong
about this since I don't physically have one in front of me to look at.

Also, it's important to note whether you want to do this mod for an S2000 or an S+.
The one I had was intended for an S+ and I was trying to figure out the pin-outs
to convert it for the Netplexing of an S2000 machine.
If I remember correctly - it didn't work right because I had some scrambled characters coming up onto the display.

If you could route the wires through the topper hole and make a nice case utilizing a dark auto-tint window vinyl sheet...
you could have one jazzy progressive display up there for all kinds of kits!
