BACKLIT REELS. WHITE OR CHROME DOES IT MATTER

I would like to put a couple of backlit reels kits in machines that didn't have them in . i understand that controller / harness / i/o card are needed that is not the question . I want to know if the white type reel reflectors are going to cause problems .Complete kits on e bay are very reasonable. if only putting bulbs in the center of the reel is only needed any feed back would be helpfull before buying them then hating them when installed .  thanks

I have both.  Reflection with chrome should be better, but I don't really notice a difference.

It's been mentioned here before that the white ones can get brittle faster from the heat of the lights, but if they're in good shape and youbturn your machines off when not in use there's really not a reason that should be a problem for you over years of ownership

Guys for the reply. i guess i will get a couple sets and try. like you said cowboygames  if i don't run them 24 -7 it hopefully will last. all mine now are chrome so i shall see if it makes a difference as per Jason's responce thanks again  K+ on your quick responces    PS. I have never done this to a slot machine BUT.  On my trailer tail lights that would get old and rusted, I would remove the bulb, cut/tear a hole for the bulb in a  piece of aluminium foil  and
 place the foil  into the light receptacle, kind of smooth it in with your finger and cut/tear off the rough edges. reinstall the bulb and your done.  Will it help reflect the light, it did on my trailers. If nothing else it will make you feel like you did something.

white / creme ones should be avoided....they are older/original design.  They melt from the heat.  I have about 20 sitting in storage that are good for parts only and some are melted so bad you can't even get the bulbs out.

Jim  For many many years light bulbs were rated in candle power (CP) now they are rated in lumens I guess it's the same thing, brightness of the bulb. Now as I understand it, the brighter the bulb the more electricity it will require, the more elect. the more heat they will generate. I think most of our members want to see the backlit as bright as possible. That being the case you would want to use a 168 bulb, 37.71 lumens  but uses .350 amps. HEAT On the flip side use a 161 12.57 lumens/ .190 amps.  Where's the trade off?

What I said was, I don't recall ever seeing a Chrome one. I've only had one machine with LEDs and I know it wasn't chrome !!

Those are 359 Xenon bulbs.  They do run very hot for sure even in "stand-by" dim mode.

   Is it possible that this group of machines sat in some unheated casino?  Seems like it would take a lot of heat to do that.

That's what happens to reels if you play slots outside in Bullhead City during the summer.

Quite possible some of their life might have been spent in Bullhead.  

I took Joey a couple of pallets of monitors, and he has them stored outside. He told me yesterday that some of the touch screens have started falling off.  Mind you it's not ever summer yet.

I recently watched a show on the History channel about slot machines and there was a spot featuring IGT and how slots work.  The production manager that was interviewed covered reels and strips.  The reels that he displayed were white, so I figured the must be newer.  Maybe they use a different material now.

You guys need to come to the 4th of July NLG BBQ, it usually gets pretty hot (115-130 degrees) around that time, but yes it is a DRY HEAT, it does make a difference without the humidity. You can experience it live! Don't get me wrong you still feel like you are melting, but it is a DRY melt! I hate humidity when it is really hot!

No matter what don't let it stop you from coming for the Annual BBQ as it is a good time with good people, good food, AC in the shop, and plenty of ice and drinks!!! Oh yeah, there is a really good Fire Works show as well! Be there or be square!

I don't know about age versus cream or chrome, but I've got a brand new set made in mid 2008 that has cream colored holders and the set in my TDWC is from 2001 and has chrome. Maybe it just depended on who IGT contracted with to make them for whatever production run. By the way, the 2001 reels being 10 years old are quiet as a mouse fart too:)

  I also had the same.  Chrome from the early machines, white from newer.  I had figured that they went cheaper as they were trying to cut costs.  I haven't had any that were melted, well not yet anyway.

Well, today I had my first experience with a "melted" set.  Luckily they work just fine out of the box, are nice and quiet, and the bulbs all worked.  In my case, the center light box on each reel was badly warped on the upper portion due to heat...enough that I figured that a shadow might be cast on a reel strip symbol when lit up.  To make matters worse, two of the bulbs were not able to come out of light boxes due to the warp.  The top and bottom light boxes were fine however and were not warped.  Here's what I did...

Since my "soon to be completed" Triple Stars single payline game is only going to use the center boxes, I just decided to remove the light box housing from the reel...1 screw to remove. 

Next I removed the bulbs from upper (non-warped) light box, and with a lot of wiggling and prying, the bulbs from the middle (warped) light box.  I figured I could just swap the upper (non-warped) light box with the middle (warped) light box to cure the potential shadowing due to the warping. 

From there, I removed the screw from the back of each light PCB and detached them  from the back of the upper and middle light boxes.

The light boxes will come off of the frame.  On the front side light box there is a set of tabs.  When these tabs are squeezed together, push the light box towards the back of the frame.  Once the light box slides towards the back, use a small flat blade screw driver to work the tabs so that that the light box will come off completely off of the frame...this part is a pain in the ass, but with patience it will come off.

Once the light boxes are off, if the hole where the light bulbs come through are warped, take some sandpaper, drill bit, file, whatever, and bore out the hole to accomodate the light bulb socket and PCB for reinstallation.

From there, reinstall the non-warped light box on the center of the frame and the warped light box that isn't intended to get any use on the upper or lower portion of the frame.

To reinstall, work the steps above backwards.

Hope this helps some folks out here out.  I didn't realize that the light boxes came apart.  If non-warped white light boxes were available, I'd buy some and replace mine just to satisfy my OCD, but I doubt these are available.
