I have double diamonds S slot and I am getting a error 21. All the posts I have seen about this error have been for s-plus slots. Is there any difference cause I don't see any board under the coin competitor with any optics on it, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Can you post a picture? See the picture in this post to see where the optics board is (the first picture that has the test button on the optics board labeled). It may have a black cover on it.

Here are some pics it looks like maybe someone tried to bypass the coin optics cause there are a couple wires that have wire nuts on them and a purple one coming off the coin comparitor not attached to anything.

Just a WAG, but you may be right. It looks like maybe someone rigged up the CC to trigger a coin in. But since it's a S, maybe something is different on those.

It's hard to see where the wires are going in your picture.

Was this slot working normally at one point and something happened, or has this machine always had the issue you've described (since you've had it)?

I am not sure it was given to me and this is the first time I have opened it up and tried to do anything with it. I willtry to take some better pics of where the wires are going, maybe that will help.

May I see a shot of the insides of your machine with the hopper pulled out?
Thanks!
I want to determine what machine this is - it may very well be a "M" machine too...

What bothers me the most are the black and red wires entering the coin comparator...
I have NEVER seen that on any IGT machine ever!

This machine is severely rigged...
Describe as best you can where those particular wires are going to and
remove the 4 small screws holding cover on the coin comparator.
Please turn the power "Off".
We need a good photo of that as well as any numbers that may be showing up on the
front of your display panel while the door is open as well as fully closed with the latch down and powered up....

Don't be afraid to use a better quality camera - they take higher resolution photographs... Tongue Out Crazy
Somethings going on with the clarity of your photo lens...are they dusty?

The red wire jumps from pin one om the comparitor plug to pin 3 on the comparitor plug. The black wire is tied to orange w/ black stripe wire with a wire nut that then goes into a molex plug. The yellow wire goes from pin six to 2 orange w/ green stripe wire with a wire nut, one is hooked up to a selonoid on the back side of the soin assembly and the other goes to the molex plug with all this hooked up with the door oped and closed I get a 21 in the winner paid. I noticed if I unhooked that molex plug it cleared the error and the reels spun one time and It showed a 0 in the credit window like it was ready to play but no way to give it credit to play. So do you think I could take that whole assembly from the molex plug on from an S+ machine would that even work?

Wow! That IS an "S" machine!
Note the MPU harness without a motherboard!  yummy
The harness is plugged directly into the MPU!

Anyways, the coin comparator has been hacked left and right....  Duh! bawling
Plug in those connectors together I circled in yellow.
This machine is not using coin-in optic circuit boards but instead
it's using a trip wire switch similar to older pinball machines!

I still don't know what the red & black wire going into the coin comparator is for yet..That bothers me the most about this set-up.
I fear it may be rigged power wires for the coin comparator board entering the circuit board via where there once was a triac IC component.
Go ahead and plug in the purple/red loop/yellow/black wires ( outlined in Orange) into the left side of the
coin comparator as shown in the 2nd photo I attached to this post.

Change the token to a regular US quarter by sliding back the black plastic coin holder.
The quarter you replace in there will be called the "Sample Coin".

Finally, power up the machine and close the door and let us know what numbers are coming up onto the display panel on front.
If there's no smoke escaping from your machine - drop a quarter into the slot and tell us what happens.
Remember, the more you tell us - the better we can help you!
Your pictures are very helpful!
I warn you...this may not work because of the way the coin comparator is severely hacked to accommodate the trip wire switch.
You may be needing to go shopping for a new harness and coin comparator?

It looks like it is just applying power to that connector instead of through the plug on the left.

It may be as simple as reconnecting the disconnected plug you circled since those wires are going the coin switch that obviously is doing nothing right now. I would try just that first (along with putting a quarter in the comparitor).

Thanks for the help I figured out that the coin switch was bad and they had it plugged up wrong. I also took out the comparator all together and just put in a regular coin mech since its going in my house. My next question is how do  I get it to pay the wins to credits instead of paying with the hopper each time? And also is there a way to see what the payout % is? The chips on the board have no stickers on them so I can't get any #'s off them.

Read this to determine your chip numbers. Then let us know and we can tell you how to change it.

http://www.newlifegames.net/spset/SPSS.htm

And once you have your reel number, you can go here and find your game, then match the chip number to get the %

I did this but only one # showed (3799) i'm guessing because it's an S and I thought I read that both chips were together in this model.

That is a 2 coin Double Diamond with a lowly 86.9%  knockout

http://www.newlifegames.net/igtbible/IGT%202CM/Game%20Library%20-%20S-Plus%20-%20Double%20Diamond%20(2%20Coin%20Multiplier).htm

See this post and see if you can navigate to the 5_x setting to change the wins to credit (must have no credits on the machine). This is for a SP1271, but typically you can get to the setting the same way on others.  Or you should be able to press the cash/credit button before play.

Maybe the best chip to play with for that 2 coin game is this one... Scratch Head  >>>

SS3817 95.188 (95.188)  11.168 (72) AAA 800/1600 (24)  320/640 (52) 8.95

Be prepared for some long droughts but explosive wins!

Look in the forum index for New Life Games Classified
Also just about every day someone posts a WTB (want to buy) WTS (want to Sell) or WTT (want to trade) so you can also see sub board listed under those type of posts on the main page.
or here is a link to them http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?board=5.0

No, they're not. The S slot integrated both the software to run the machine and the data for the game into one 256k chip, while the S+ separated the program and data into two chips: 512k for the program, and 64k for the data.

The numbers for a particular game theme and payback percentage are the same, and the reel data is the same, but the S+ uses 64k SS data chips (e,g., SS3817), while the S slot uses 256k RS composite chips (e.g., RS3817).

An SS chip won't work in an S slot because it has no code to run the machine, only data.

I think some of our vendors have them. Of course, I have no idea of how extensive or varied their supplies are.

Jim at Blueridge comes to mind first, naturally.  yes applause
