I put new battery in. Now no sound.
To turn on sound for S+ do you use set chip or other way?

10mhz or 16mhz? If 10, did you maybe hit the volume dial? On a SP873 DIP switch 3 is for spin sounds.  I don't have a PSR for a 878.

If 10, did you maybe hit the volume dial? Did not turn volume control. Doesn't make a difference where I turn it.
On a SP873 DIP switch 3 is for spin sounds. # is on.

I thought that when battery died it lost setting & there might be setting in program to set.

If you have a volume control on the board, it's a 10MHz.  For giggles, have you tried taking out the board, turning switch 3 off and on a couple of times, and reinserting the board?

...Did not turn volume control. Doesn't make a difference where I turn it.
...

Does it affect the coin in and rollup "ding" sound levels? It should. You can also go into the sound test and use it to adjust the volume.

I would make sure that the overall sound is working and adjusted properly before continuing to troubleshoot the spin sound problem.

Tried it. Didn't work.
If there are no settings in program I'll have to find a speaker & try that.
They had wires shorted out & fusses were blown. Then it laying around & battery was dead.

tried another speaker. NO GO.
The guy said not to worry about speaker. He said the sound drove him crazy.
For my part I'd like to get it going before I give it back.

Based on your last two posts, it appears that the sound isn't working at all. We're talking apples and bowling balls here. Regardless of what's happening with the spin sound option, you should always have other sounds. If not, then forget about the switch and the spin sounds: you've got a bigger problem.

Thanks Stat. When the fuses blew it must have screwed something else up.
He said he didn't care about sound so the best might be to give it back to him without sound.
His Grandkids are who play with it & chances are they'll screw it up again.

Have another MPU to try? It would certainly make it easier to determine if it's the board or a wiring issue.

Also make sure the MPU does not have any bent pins. Make sure all plugs are seated good on the motherboard.

I don't have another S+ to try board.
I checked pins & OK.  Checked all plugs & Ok.
Sprayed contact cleaner on board pins & Volume control again - no help

Check the speaker seperately to see if it just makes a sound. Sometimes a wire may be broken in the cone of the speaker where it mates up with the main feed. Or an audio chip may be blown on the board.

I think it's on the board. You know what shape this was in when he brought it in.
You also know he does not want to put to many $'s into it.
How was your trip yesterday?

We had a great time, my friend lost 250 and I lost 35 on VP. All the VP sucked horribly at The Sands (that's where we ended up). Then we went to a friend's radio studio, he is an on air personality on the radio. I did win 50 at the Hamfest in the 2nd grand prize draw though.

Fordsbs! My avatar is NOT a pig !!!   frying pan   Crazy

Anyways, have you tried to see if the MPU is sending any sound signals out to your belly glass speaker?
If not, here's a way to check...
Open the door, turn on the power and press the little white test button about 5 times or
until you see a [50] in the "Winner Paid" window...okay?

Now set your multimeter to like 200VAC and put a red lead prong onto the green wire
and the black lead of the multimeter onto the white wire anywhere near the speaker connectors.

The "Spin" button should be lit up, watching the multimeter, and pressing the "Spin" button should change the values.
IF the values on the multimeter go back to zero every time
after releasing the "Spin" button - you have a good signal going through the speaker wires.

I know you're not getting any sounds right now but this is a good test to see if you're getting sound signals through the wiring.
If you're getting the multimeter to change, then you probably just need a new speaker.
Rip any 8ohm speaker out of an old radio...it will work!
I made a short video clip to show you how I checked for a sound signal.
It wasn't easy to do as I only have two hands...  arrow >>>

Hmm.....I'm now suspecting that you may have a bad, broken speaker wire...
most likely it had gotten pinched in the door hinge?
You may need to check your two speaker wires from the speaker back to the motherboard.... hissy fit bawling arghh!!!
That's a royal pain in the butt if you don't know which two pins it enters the motherboard.
I have to check my motherboard schematics for that answer...

The sound chip on your MPU, is it soldered to the MPU as in the 1st picture or
is it socket-ed like in the 2nd picture?.
Click on any photo to enlarge....>>>

Okay...
I just checked my motherboard schematics.
The speaker wires go to pin#30(+) and pin#20(-) on the J3 header.
Respectively,  these wires are white w/green stripe and
green w/white stripe to the motherboard.

However, on top of the MPU cage/tray where the door harness connects to the 24-pin Molex is.
(It's the largest connector on top of the MPU tray)
The speakers go into the two pins where I've outlined in the drawing below.
Again, click to enlarge if needed...>>>
