S+ Motherboard question

Just replaced the motherboard on a slant top. Do you need to use the clear & set chips afterwards? This is the same machine my friend moved with coins still in it. I am now getting an error code 21. I tried to clean the optics, I placed the entire coin in unit in my machine and it works fine, his CPU board works fine in my machine. I have not yet tried putting my coin in assembly in his machine (he is 60 mi. away). Just not sure if the clear chip affects the motherboard as well as the CPU board.

The clear chip will also affect the mainboard's eeprom chip.  It will clear all the accounting data.  Though an error 21 you should be able to clear with just open/close door.  Also check comparitor for stuck coins?

If you replace motherboard and cpu board at the same time, and they previously worked, they should continue to work in a different cabinet.  If you just replaced the motherboard but are now using another cpu board, you need to run the set chip.  You typically do not need a clear chip unless you have some kind of stubborn error that doesn't go away.

I did replace just the motherboard that I just bought. I'll try the set chip.

Sometimes the plastic coin guides that's sandwiched between the coin-in optics get broken off.
If they are broken or gone, the coins will just miss one of the 3 optic lights, causing errors as well.
The coin-in optic on the left is missing a couple of vertical guides.
The coin-in optic guides on the right picture are intact.

21 is a coin in tilt.
You should be able to clear this just by opening the door and pressing the White - Self Test Button.
What you hope is that the next coin you drop in is not going to cause the error to re-occur.
I have never heard of someone needing a clear chip to clear a 21 however this certainly won't hurt anything.

Your coin path flows from the door to the comparitor to the ABC optic board.

The ABC board is a set of 3 optics and once the coin has passed each optic a credit is issued.
The concept of 3 optics is that the timing of the coin fall must be within parameters and of course it must fall in order.
Any kind of stringing (the act of putting the coin on a string and pulling it back up) reverses the sequence and a tilt occurs.

The most common cause of a 21 is simply a dirty optic. It only takes 1 of the 3 to be dirty enough to cause the error.
It could also be a bad optic or a broken optic wire. It is also possible to fry your optics by getting voltage where it doesn't belong.

On the back of the optic you can press a small button and it will register a credit on the machine. If the credit doesn't register I would look for the broken wire or replace the optics.

The S+ is flexiable and the compartitor can be setup to use different sizes of coins - A CC-16 handles small coins (50c and smaller) while a CC-33 does a dollar and larger tokens.
To ensure the optics register properlly there are plastic spacers (guides) available for the optics to ensure the coin passes in front of the optic and registers properly.
As pointed out if either the spacer is missing or wrong this can cause issues as well.
