« on: July 10, 2011, 01:57:59 AM »

There was some talk earlier today on another thread about some of us being color blind nerds Nerd so I thought I'd post this link. Crazy

The test doesn't cover the entire range of color, and uses secondary and tertiary colors instead of primary colors.
A perfect score is 0. The higher your score, the worse you did. Duh!

FWIW, I scored an 8. The tiles I had problems with were in the light-blue/turquoise section. I read somewhere that the average score for men is around 35, and the average score for women is around 18.

Enjoy.

Why?  Scratch Head  Older people don't seem to score any worse than younger people.

If the person taking the test is using a decent, modern monitor or LCD with sufficient brightness and has no medical vision problems that would affect his/her ability to distinguish color, then the results are mostly due to inherited color blindness, or a lack of it.

<ADD> People who score well above average (low scores) would be better suited for hobbies or professions that require excellent color discrimination, such as being a graphic artist, painter, color photographer, or working with graphic or commercial art in programs like Photoshop, or being in charge of proofing colors used in silk screening, etc.  Of course, there's more to those professions that lack of color blindness, and this test doesn't cover the entire visible spectrum.

Actually, it slightly randomizes the colors each time (within narrow limits), so an unchanged score will vary, usually between 900-1150. arrow

Bunker, the colors shouldn't wrap within each large box. Your screen width is too small, and that is causing some of the fourth line and the button to be lost behind the advertising.  <EDIT> Actually Bunker, they saw you coming and deliberately screwed it up just for you!! The low and high score crap data they display at the end are useless, since at least one person in every age group and sex got a 0, and at least one person got a really crappy score (probably deliberately submitted after just clicking the link.) Duh! arrow

It would only be useful if they posted the detailed percentiles of the results for each age group and sex, and the number of subjects, and even so, it would still be BS since there would be no controls. This test is quite popular on the internet (no one else actually has the test, but lots and lots of other sites point to it), and some of the peripheral sites have done their own informal studies. Again, there are no controls or real accuracy, but after looking at a few of the studies, patterns emerge.

What's most interesting to me about the test is that it helps one determine where one's color discrimination is "weak", even if only slightly. Still, for those of us who score low, it's impossible to determine if the apparent "weakness" is due to the monitor or ourselves unless we try the test on a different monitor.

In my case, I've done the test on an LCD laptop and consistently tested weak in the turquoise/light blues (scoring 8 the first time, and between 6-12 in general.) If I try it a couple of times on a good CRT and get the same results, then I'll know that I have trouble with those colors, if not, then I'll know it's my LCD. Tongue Out

You're helping to prove my point. propeller   You have to be able to carefully match and distinguish colors when restoring and repainting. It's not surprising that you scored well. yes
