On the top of these posts where it lists who is viewing a particular topic it generally has member names and number of guests. Today on this topic it also says "1 hidden". How do we hide on here? And what's the purpose?

lol...I have no idea who it is...probably just a moderator sneakin' 'round making sure
nobody's breaking the rules or something like that. It's no biggie...it's for the site really.

We can't hide.  It's an option that can be enabled by the board administrators, but it's not enabled on the NLG forums.  Even if the option isn't enabled for the majority of the members (which it isn't), administrators still have the option to hide their online presence by setting an option in their profile.

What's the purpose?  To prevent other users from knowing that they're online.  Of course, if you see a post from a person within the past minute or so then you'd know they were online, but by enabling that option, the person doesn't appear in the "Who's Online" information.

Regular members used to be able to hide their online status on the old site, but Joey changed his mind when he set up the new site. It’s a case of “owner’s prerogative.” Hidden members never could, and still cannot hide from admins and global moderators. “Remember Sid, we toys see ev-er-eeeee-thing.”  Sherlock Smiley bust gut laughing


On the new site, admins and global moderators can hide their online status. Reasons include:

1. Wanting to keep up with what’s happening on the site, but not wanting to have people see their name at the top of the online list and call them on the phone, because the person is busy.

2. Having to work on the site’s back end or script/code problems and again, wanting to be left alone and not receive phone calls, since their name would just sit at the top of the who’s online list from the constant site activity.

3. Having a couple of hours or more of regular housekeeping duties to be done on the site and wanting to fly under the radar, because this type of activity also just keeps one’s name sitting at the top of the who’s online list.

4. Just wanting some privacy. Hey, it’s a perk. Tongue Out
