I just got a Mikon Controller and display - the device reads EMPTY on the screen.

I hooked up a 9pin straight through Male to Female cable from the laptop and ran the PSP 2.0 program.

Depending on which controller I choose (Con1, Con2, Old) I get a communication error.

What am I doing wrong ?

Is this a conI, conII or a supercontroller? The conI and conII controllers will send to the display the messages from files in this order--JP0, JP1, JP0, JP2, JP0, JP3, JP0 and over again. There are dip switch settings to enable an idle message to display untill a coin in is sensed, then it will display the JP amount as entered in JP0.
  JP1, JP2, JP3 are used to display lesser jackpots and advertising messages. If they are empty, then only the JP0 amount will be displayed. If the dips are set to display an idle message and there is no message in the message file then you will get an "empty" displayed on the display. Also in the conI and conII programs on the laptop, I think on page 3, there is a setting (F3) that enables MSG for message control. This should be ---. I'm writing this from memory so it may be approxamate. When I go to work tommorrow I will get the dip settings for the conI and conII.

This is easy....There are no dip switches.

There is a 2 positon switch which appears to be on/off as all the LEDs on the board go off when it is in one position.
There is a second 2 position switch which brings up what appears to be a identification setting. Something like GCON=1.
There are then two small touch buttons. One which increment GCON=1 thru GCON=64 and then back to 1.
The second touch button puts it to other screens with simmilar settings and again I can use that first button to increment the values.
Everything is set to 1.

Mikohn Error Codes (pre-1998);

There are two general categories of error codes;
Display & Controller.

Display error codes;
C1 Display has lost communication with controller.
    Perhaps a broken wire or unplugged.
C2 Current value too long for display.
    Parameters incorrectly set.
C3 Verify error on data written to RAM on LED logic.
    Jackfile too long?
C4 PROM limit overflow. (Jackpot value exceeds fixed limit in PROM.)
    Error in current jackpot value? (Too many digits/symbols.)

Controller error codes;
$C.10 Controller checksum failure.
         Usually associated with stand-alone or slave component.
$C.11 Bad reception. (Over 20 over-run framing errors.)
         Usually caused by loose fiber connector.
$C.30 Slave controller does not detect master controller.
         Improper switch setting on controller?
$C.31 Slave polled but not acknowledged (more than 20 failures).
         Error in fiber system. Check all fibers.

I know Jay owns both a CHAMI and CHAMII.  Which one are you working on Jay?

Forgot how to do it for the moment, but I got my CHAMII going first with a "Rebirth".  This reset everything to factory and then let it come up with the fake jackpot of something like $1254.32 without it connected to any machine (But the laptop to rebirth it).

From the descriptions I am currently playing with the Chami II.

I downloaded the manual and killed a tree or two printing it. I am not at home this week so I have not had a chance to read or play.

I envision a trip to radioshack to buy a cable I can re-pin.

Anyone can tell me off hand if a Mikohn super controller can be used on a progressive not with a chameleon display but using a plasma screen. Or do you need a dedicated pc and program interfaced to the controller for showing animation and jackpot amounts??

cheers

Not knowing too much about the Mikohn controllers, perhaps this helps from the CON2 hardware manual.  Wish I knew the actual answer.  I can't find any info on what the AGL display is??

2.3.1 Visual Display Connections
CON2 supports the following displays:
CHAMII MARK1 SUPREME
CHAMII+ MARK2 AGL
The harness shown in Appendix A (on page 28) can be used to connect CON2s to all displays listed
above, with the exception of the AGL. Visual displays are connected to the CON2 at J5 or J6. If you are
using Mark 1 Animation Displays, read the Caution on the next page.

The only info I could find on interfacing Mikohn to a plasma was in the AGS software manual.  So I don't think the CON2 alone will be of any use.  This is from the AGS (advanced graphics system) manual.  As you thought, it requires their Plasma PAK which appears to be a computer (which produces the VGA output for the Plasma displays) and a DCU plus other interconnect parts.

I have seen other controllers offered on Ebay in conjunction with a plasma display.

I don't think that the output of a CONx would drive a plasma display without some other intermediary system.

You could possilby use a PC with some kind of serial PLC to receive the display information and then combine the registers with some kind of powerpoint software to drive it.

I would call Mikohn and see what they have to offer. They might have some kind of upgrade program.

Jay, Cactusjack

Thanks for the replies on this one, thought as much. Will try to contact Mikohn.that's if they bother to answer their phones

Was checking out another system which is very similar to Mikohn and it supports plasma display/progressive/mystery but is very expensive,
www.gamingsupport.com

Maybe they will sell me a package just for the plasma link up, worth a try at least.

Will post if I get any positive feedback just for your reference in future.

cheers  guys

I hate to burden everyone with simple neophyte sh**, but I would like to put together a progressive of WMS 401 Reel slots.  Unfortionately, I do not have the documentation for the Progressive port on the MB and would like to know the pinouts (i.e. c/o pulse, jp pulse, serial, etc.).

Also, I've only got Mikohn Supercontrollers (are they still industry wide accepted) Models Con 2I, Con 2A, Con2IF, and Con2AF.  I've also got Translux Serial and Non Serial (Prism Loader is the nonserial and Total Lux is the serial) progressive controllers.

Will these support WMS progressive systems?

I have a couple of S+'s that I'd like to "network" together to form a two machine progressive setup. What do I need in order to do this?

Mikon Con1 or Con2 link controller.
PSP software (free download) although some turkeys are selling it on ebay for 60.
Display to plug into the con1/con2.
