S+ MPU dead - cause and solution

I received a S+ MPU for repair. It would not boot (totally dead). The problem was caused by a screwdriver being slid under the CMOS socket instead of the chip when trying to remove it. This severed the CMOS power trace (see arrow on picture 1). Installed a jumper on the back of the board and the board functions fine.

Nice work Poppo.  I cringe when I see stuff like that.  Using the right tool for the job would have prevented it.  A screwdriver, bent or otherwise, is not a good tool to use for removing IC's and often leads to bent/broken pins too.  Here's what you need to remove them, cost about $20.00.

Tilt, where can those be had?  You guys would die if you saw the condition of my my massacred SB socket on my S2000 MPU.  I'm always careful to make sure that the bent screwdriver is under the EPROM and not the socket, but switching kits in and out abuses the plastic on that socket.

True, but no way I'm retiring my universal extractor.

I've been plugging the EX2 on this site for years, but every time I post, someone inevitably responds that it's too expensive and that the PLCC extractor (WRONG TOOL) or a bent screwdriver will do just as well (which they won't unless you're very practiced at using them for the wrong job.)

Tilt, you can officially take over promoting the EX2 on NLG.

Jason ...You need to do what I did...Use a ZIFF socket! ( Yes I know it is big ..but it works great!!)

I bought some of those chunky green ZIF sockets off of eBay for my S+ -- the pins were sideways from what I needed.  I twisted each one with a pliers until they were all facing the right way, then put it in my MPU board and made sure that every pin was seated correctly.  It killed the board.  It wouldn't work after that, even with the ZIFs removed.  I love the idea of them, but I'm deathly afraid of putting them in any of my boards, especially the more expensive S2000 or Game King boards, after my bad experience.

Low profile are available...but cost more. These did not need any mods. plugged right in as is.

Years ago I posted about just plugging low profile ZIF into the existing sockets. Works fine.
