Maybe someone has done this but I thought I would share what I did.  It uses one of these name tags http://www.ebay.com/itm/380364794929?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_6481wt_1159

It will store multiple messages and scroll.  It is battery powered but has a port for usb programming that will power it on and start the message.  I have hooked the usb to power in the machine so the message starts with the machine. I still need to make a nicer plate to mount it.
