Bally 5 liner problem.

   This is my first time using this site. 
I am trying to fix the following problem..     Plug machine in, put in 5 quarters and it works fine the first time I play it.  If I just leave it sit for a minute it starts buzzing and ringing etc.  The payout meter on the face next to the Play one to five coins just keeps running through numbers non stop.  I am very limited in repairing these machines.  Like, very very limited.  It acts like something is shorting out.  I cannot get a single number to let me know what might be wrong.  I do have a manuel but this problem is over my head.  Help????

Is it a Bally 5000, 5500, or a 6000 model?
I don't know a whole lot about Bally's but I thought you might get better help
if you could tell the guys exactly what you have.
There's a few different models.

I guess my next question is can anyone help me with my problem.
On the meter that also list's error code.  I can make 1 play from a cold start.  It accepts the bet and spins the reels.  Then I get multiples error codes or just plain random numbers.  Doesn't stop so I can get a error code and go on from there.  What to do?  It has worked well for 10 years so something is bound to happen.  Would love to get it back working. 
Is there a way I can run a test on the 2 boards.  If nothing else can I buy two new boards?
I can pull the reels and boards if I can find some way to run tests.
Any help would be appreciated.

It's ironic that the justification for the Summit conversion was to "get all that unreliable wiring out and replace it with reliable electronics". Forty years later the unmodified EMs are still going strong and can generally be kept running with a screwdriver and pair of pliers, but all the Summits I've ever come across have been basket cases and most have gone for scrap. Like Proten says, HMS is the only place to go.
