Is it a model 5500 or a 6000?
Are there any other #'s  other than 1?

The one thing I remember seeing on here quite often is the 5500s burn up cmos batteries pretty quick when stored. I would start by grabbing a multimeter and checking the memory battery voltage on that board you pulled out earlier. It will probably need some settings adjusted after a battery change, but if that battery is low you aren't going to get anywhere till it's replaced. Check the voltage and let us know what you come up with

If I were you I'd read through manual & see if you get any ideas to try to fix.
You will find it a good hobby to get into.
There should be someone on here to help you.

PS  give it a chance before you get rid of it.

Agree with Post  plus it'll be worth a little more if it's fully functional when you try to sell it!! yes  the battery is a pretty easy fix if you can solder; i got one for a friend awhile back for his 5500 from Jim at blueridgeslots.  he's a great guy to deal with and can really assist with parts and repairs on pretty much everything out there, including your 5500.  if i recall correctly there was a simple reset procedure that had to be done after a battery change; search the forum and i'm sure you'll find it.  good luck!!
