Does the 25yr or older slot law apply to the software or just the cabinet? ie. Could i somehow put Game King software in an older cabinet? lol Sorry if this is a stupid question.  Scratch Head Thanks for any info.

I don't think that will get you around the law.

I think it's a very valid question.
However until you test it in court all you will have will be opinions.

I personally believe the risk is the optics of having a gaming machine. Aka the cabinet.

I don't understand the law at all.
1. If you use the machine for entertainment with tokens then it is no different than a pinball game or animated lamp.
Could you wager on the outcome of a game of pinball - yes
Conversely it could be argued that pinball is a game of skill vs a game of chance.

2. You can legally own the Masc set of slot games. IGT, Bally Williams etc.
So that kind of blows that argument out of the water.

Can you own a deck of cards ? Yes
Can you own a set of dice ? Yes
Can you buy poker chips at Walmart ? Yes

I have been at kids arcade in CA and they had a wheel of fortune type of game. Depending on where the arrow lands the unit spits out a different volume of tickets. Which are then exchanged for junk prizes.

3. If you were to lift the software and do a MAME version of the game king this would be no different than Masc other than you would be on the wrong side of copyright.

4. Depending on how the law is written does it even cover card games. The reason i bring this up is that the latest slicing of hairs is that the.justice department has just ruled that Internet gambling does not violate the wire act (previously used to shut down gaming to US based patrons). It only applys to betting on sports events.

If you have deep pockets I think you could challenge and chage the law.
I can only guarentee that it won't be free and it won't be fast.

It would be illegal, I checked. The machine is only as old as it's key operating componants.

But the title says it's a 1966 VW Bug

That's funny - my father used to build baja bugs when I was a kid in '66.
They all used souped-up dual-carbed VW engines which were basically.... Porsche Targa motors!

I suspect the change in the CA law was influenced by the casinos and or manufacturers of Electronic Gaming Machines.
They probably figure if you cant legally own it for home use and you want to play that particular game you will play it at a casino near you.

It's a state law. Right now all the casinos are native owned and the CA government receives very little from this enterprise.

Those Indians are smart!  yes

The dummies out here on the east coast signed tribal gaming compacts that give away 60-80% to the state
even though the state contributed absolutely nothing to build them! Duh!

If ca wants to fix their budget crisis.
1. Legalize marajuana bars.
This will allow taxation on a substance that 60% of population admits to using.
This then somewhat controls demand on illegal sources and may improve illegal immigration stats.
Medical mj is already legal with allowances for those without a healthcare plan to grow their own.
Obama care 101

2. Legalize brothels
Interesting stat is that nevada brothels are more frequented by CA residents. Clark county NV which includes LV and Reno Outlaws prostitution which pushes legal locals into rural locations which are closer to CA.
This will allow taxation on an activity that is per capita higher in the sunshine state than any other.
Let's not forget all those paid actors in the adult film business.
Some one is paying them to have sex so in one form or another prostitution is already legal in ca
This then somewhat controls demand on illegal sources and may improve illegal immigration stats.
May help the spread of HIV and other STD. The adult Industry already have these rapid test infrastructure in place.

Reno is in Washoe county, but prostitution is illegal in any county with over 400,000 residents. So, all the brothels are in the less populated places.

Universal came out with their computerized slot in 1985. They didn't put a date of manufacture on anything until 1993. But they did have copywrite dates stamped on the reel strips.
The eprom numbers also gave a clue to what year they were developed. If you recognized it.
So right now a person in a 25-yr state could have a Magnificent 7's game (1986) and be perfectly fine. As soon as they changed the game kit in that same cabinet to Midas Touch (1991), your illegal. What kind of sense does that make?

Colorado is about the only state that took a logical look at it and made 1984, the year before computerized slots, as the cutoff date. Makes it a little more senseable if you think outlawing slots is senseable to begin with.  Scratch Head
