Is this an I-Game with a monitor?
or are you seeing "Terminal Disabled" in the blue VFD reel glass display?
Sounds like a WAP / non-standalone maybe server-based game?

Isn't there an option to disable the machine in menu 3.0? That's where I'd be looking first

Steve,
Basically the Cashout button flips you through the "pages" while the Spin button enters the options on the page.
The "Max" bet button backs you out of the options to the previous "page".

So, with this in mind...press the cashout button to get to page '3'.
Hit the spin button to get into the options for page '3'.
Hit the cashout button to flip through the options.
Hitting the spin button, while in the options - will 'set' the setting.

Hitting the max button will back you up.

I will try to email/send you a menu sheet to look at.

You will see it's a lot like the Igame menus in a lot of ways except were using an itty bitty blue VFD screen instead.

But start by opening the main door and pushing the white button on the side of the MPU. Don't close the door after pushing it though or the machine will reset

Maybe, maybe not.
Sometimes you need a keychip for certain things.

All options can be set without a keychip except for the menu 7 options. Only requirement for the others is no credits on the machine.

IF it says Terminal Disabled that is different than out of service mode.

Terminal disabled, is a message that is displayed when a tech or other employee at a casino used a SAS host program or the like to send that machine Shutdown (lock out play) command.

It might be best to clear the machine.

i agree with this, the only way to get out of this is to clear or have a host connected to machine

so  I do need a clear chip? i think they might have shut these down when they were taking them off floor to sell , there was also a piece of paper on the battery on the board to left of reels, so that battery was making contact, book keeping is all there

unfortunately standard only deals with ticket validation.
