Did you get the set chip and the new chips from the same vendor in the same order?

It sounds like the labels are switched.

<ADD> yes, put the chip that gets the 61 back into the machine, boot it up and press and hold the white test button for at least 3 seconds. If you hear a ding and the display reads 61 1, then close the door and turn the jackpot reset key. If the chip is mislabeled the reels should spin to the blanks with the seams and the game should be ready to play.

Let us know.

jd  are we talking about two different chips? you said you put the set 15 chip in and got a 61.  The set chip is only for enabling the bill acceptor. the clear chip is for clearing ram.

When you have the clear chip in as soon as you turn power on you should hear the ding, and then press the white button and you should see random numbers in your display counting up to 9999. two sets of numbers.

when you put the set chip in it does nothing until you press the white button. A 0 in the coins played and 90 in the winner paid indicates the bill acceptor is disabled. press spin button so the 0 changes to 1.

Press the test button and a 6 will be displayed in the coins played indicating the denomination in cents, press spin to change press test again and power down ,replace chip power up clear 61  61-1  reset key, program load then off to races.

jim

PS------lets just put the sp chip from your good board to the suspect board and see what happens ??? I have yet to mess up a board by switching chips!!

Yeah I put in the clear chip booted up and got a 61.   I then took out the clear chip and put in the reel chip and got nothing...

You should not get a 61 with a clear chip.  I'd agree that it sounds like your chips are not labeled correctly.

Yes, please try my suggestion. yes  Put the chip that gives you the 61 into the machine, no matter what the label says.
If you get the 61 1 and the game reset as I described, my next step will be to walk you through the menu to the pay table test 4 to read the SS number.
If this suggestion doesn't work then we'll move on to another suggestion.

Stat - I took your suggestion  -  I put in the chip that gave me the 61 - I then pushed the white button and got 61 1  I then reset the jackpot and got a 0 in the credits played window with a blinking candle.   -  That's it - DEAD

So the board had a SP731 chip and a SS reel chip installed.

Just for kicks I took out the working SP790 and SS reel chip from my other working board and put them in to see what happens.   I got the 61 then 61 1 then I got an error 68.  Terrified I quickly took those chips out - put them back in the known working board and thank goodness it still works fine.

So now what do I do ?

" Don't be terrified...it's okay really, you wont harm anything. All "code 68" means is that the machine is telling you that the reel (SS) eprom was "non-compatiable" to the Game (SP) eprom. To fix> You need to only put in a different SP chip. That's it! Don't be scared...

You chips are definitely mis-marked. The chip that's giving you the error 68 code is an actual reel chip.

Just to let everyone know this is where it stands now -  I put the SP731 and miss labeled SS chip in the new board and again got the
61.   I pushed the white button and got 61 1.  I then turned the jackpot key and got a 0 in the coins entered and a blinking candle.  From this point I can't do anything.

Just to be sure,
You MUST close the door after you get the 61-1 code and THEN turn the reset key.....okay?

Yes that is exactly what I did.  That got rid of the 61 1 and put a 0 in the coins played window and started the bottom candle light blinking.

Also,
SP731 is an older SP chip, It's a TYPE 0/1/4/5/12 chip and will only work with those type of games.
The SSchip you have may be a TYPE 2 nudging or Haywire type of chip....That's why you're getting a code 68 "non-compatiable" message.

Also, the SP731 chip needs only a SET005/015/017, I believe, if the mis-marked chip is a different SET chip, that could also explain the code 68 as well...

SeeWhat I mean?>>>dont worry...now all we need to do is find out what that mysterious chip is and you'll be on your way to exploring bold new frontiers!...lol?

Yes that is exactly what I did.  That got rid of the 61 1 and put a 0 in the coins played window and started the bottom candle light blinking.

Sounds normal. Did you try putting a coin in?

Stat - I took your suggestion  -  I put in the chip that gave me the 61 - I then pushed the white button and got 61 1  I then reset the jackpot and got a 0 in the credits played window with a blinking candle.   -  That's it - DEAD

So now what do I do ?

<ADD> I just read the last posts, but I thought I'd post this anyway. Follow stayouttadabunker first, but consider this:

Good. So you tried my suggestion and then Jim's.

PS------lets just put the sp chip from your good board to the suspect board and see what happens ??? I have yet to mess up a board by switching chips!!

I believe we're dealing with multiple issues. First, I think your new board is bad.
I say this because you stated that putting the known good chips into the new MPU board into the same machine produced a 68 error. 68 is the error for an invalid data EPROM, not for a game change. That's error 67. Since you know that those chips work in the same machine with a different MPU board, it should be the board by process of elimination.

So far we have:
A mis-labeled clear chip that gives you a 61 and 61 1. So it's a reel chip. It may be okay or not.
A second chip that is labeled a reel chip whose function is in question (but it might be a clear or set chip)
A new MPU board that is most likely bad.

Have you tried using the mis-labeled chip that gives you the 61 code in the known good MPU board with the known good SP731 in the same machine? Before doing this, there is a caveat. If it produces a game change and you step through the errors to clear them and bring up the new game, you will disable your bill validator.
Do you have a good set chip to turn it back on?

First I really REALLY want to thank everyone for their help especially StayOut -   Hail

He walked me through taking out the chips from the working board and placing them into the new board and starting it up.  We got it to work!!  So now it is confirmed that both boards work!

So the question is now can SP731 work with SS6173   -  and my guess is no because they don't!
I guess it could be either chip that is bad too.

Yes, the 731 will work with the Black Cherry chip you have, you just have bad software or mismarked stuff

 Congratulations  Ecstatic / Top Award

SS6173 should work with the SP731. It is a type 5 game. Here is the PAR sheet for it.

So what about the other (set? clear?) chip? Did you figure out what it was and if it works?

Now that you know what's what, don't forget to correctly label your chips!  propeller propeller stir the pot / get cooking
