I love looking at all the old machines. The funny thing is that when I started out collecting, I wanted only newer machines because those were the ones I had played in casinos. Now that I have the newer ones, I'd like to start a small collection of these mechanicals.

<Add> They tell us to "Gamble Responsibly". It should read "Collect Responsibly"; collecting is much more expensive.

I still have my "older, but not that old" mecahnical Aristocrat Fair Go.  It's beside me in my computer room.  Jackpot of either three aces or three 7s  is a whopping $5.75.  Also has scattered 7s pays 20 quarters, scattered aces pays 10 quarters.  I think I posted a pic on the old site a few years ago.

Well well, very interesting! Some of these are from the old Liberty Bell collection, more recently from the Nevada Gambling Museum. I had a feeling I'd seen some of them recently, and sure enough almost the entire collection is up for sale at Victorian Casino Antiques on March 6-8. Footnote: Mills Golden Falls

This machine had 20 symbols per reel, but only 10 stops. Most of the time you were playing on even numbered symbols that were a very tight game, but on the 3rd and 7th plays the stop arms moved up so that the odd numbered symbols hit, which were very loose. The chances of you playing 2 games (the 3rd and 7th) without hitting a cherry on this second set was extremely low! So it almost never had to give the player any money back. As an added attraction, 8 out of 10 games you got a near miss, as the loose odd numbered symbols were either side of the payline.

Footnote: "character" slots

By which I mean the statues of cowboys, etc, with a slot machine torso. Most of these are carved out of wood. A large number were made by the Character Manufacturing Company on Virginia Street in Reno starting in 1948, hand-carved by a variety of people. You still see them occasionally in real (non-corporate) casinos, though purely for decoration, as the slots are usually non-functional. There's one in the casino at Searchlight.

Cowboy artist Frank Polk made 92 of them. Everyone who sells one claims it's a Polk, because these are most valuable, but if you're thinking of buying one you might want to verify that - Polk only worked there two years, 1951 and 1952. A lot of them are signed by the artist. They mostly hold a Mills HiTop or a Pace slot but the oldest ones hold a Mills half-top, and a few (four?) hold a Jennings Standard Chief - these were specially made for the Nevada Club in Reno.

The cocktail waitresses are plastic and have a variety of wigs and clothing. Also by Character Manufacturing Co, 21 were made to order for Golden Casino in Reno in 1956. The Golden burned down in 1962, but all 21 were saved from the fire. People try and claim Frank Polk modeled these too, but I don't believe it.

I've seen cowboy characters with HiTops go as low as $3000 on Ebay, so they're affordable, though I've seen others go unsold with very optimistic reserves, like $15,000. I've only seen one waitress sold and she fetched $17,000 at live auction.

Some of those machines are simply works of art, while others look like cigarette dispensers. What a great collection.
