Bally 809-N mechanical problem...need help!!! :(

Mike, you might be able to unlatch or remove that torsion spring to help prevent wear on the half gear bushing/nyliner.
You might contact Fox or one of the other slot parts people to see if you can get a new(er) nyliner to put in place of your worn one.  That should help take out slop.  Don't know if they're still available or not.  If not, write back and I can give suggestions.
Let us know when you get it fixed.
Good luck with the 120 students, surely you'll find a couple of gems amongst them.

OK...gear is back where it should be. (ten seconds to adjust, twenty minutes to find the e-clip...ugh). Now, the handle is still sticking but I'm sort of back on track...when pulled, the reels seem like they're JUST about to kick...and it takes only a very slight push to get it going. Back to the driveshaft/spring adjustment?
And as far as parts, I'll check with Fox. That's not the sort of things he lists on fee-bay, but perhaps he has 'em lying around. I'll shoot him a message and see what the story is.
...according to the (useless) Bally manual, that torsion spring was replaced by a different spring later on...hmmm...

I call them Jesus clips, because you go "Jesus, where'd it go?"
Always put your thumb on the clip when you pry it loose with your screwdriver, else it's gone....
I used to find them in my hair after a day of overhauls.

A "Jesus" clip is the perfect description!!!!! Today, mine popped off and went backwards, caught up in the wiring of the beau plugs. Amazing. That's what's good about these forums...just when you think you're the only one who has these ridiculous issues, a kindred spirit appears online.
And yes...the machine seems as if it's at the "almost there" point. Of course, we both know that as soon as the reels spin properly, I'll have a coin-in problem or something new and stupid to worry about.
Maybe I should go back to stamp collecting?????

Agreed. Stamps, coins, casino chips, comics...he who dies with the most toys, right? But my machines are always my favorite. And since there's always a problem...always some new skills to develop. Hey, maybe when I get this thing working, I'll re-visit my Mills Diamond Front, which has been a display piece for about five years now...rebuilt the escalator twice, replaced the escalator....don't ask!
...and by the way, your posts with the six reel Bally EM were great! Reminded me of a great 5c six-reeler at the Golden Gate right by the Fremont St entrance. I never won anything on that machine, but I used to play it for hours...I was sorry when it was taken off the floor. I asked a floor person what happened to it, and he told me that "it was too hard to maintain, and most of the techs who knew how to work on it had retired."
The last EM I saw in operation was a Bally JPO in Virginia City...it used to pay silver dollars (that was late '07). I hear it's still there, but instead of Morgan silver dollars, they switched to Ike dollars. So it goes...

Cal Neva here in Reno used to have silver dollar machines.  You could score once in awhile.  Probably gone by now, I don't go downtown much since they blew up the Mapes.  Rotten rat bastards....
So how far did you break down your Mills?  I've fixed the payout slides, but always been too afraid to tear one completely down.
Kinda like the first time I had sex, sure I was scared, I was all alone....

 @OldReno...I was alone as well! I know, too bad about the Mapes; they have a habit of doing things like that, don't they? As far as the Mills, my first machine was a Poinsettia. On that one I had perpetual slide issues, which is why I traded it in for the Diamond Front (very dumb in retrospect- that machine was ALL original)...on that one, I've taken apart and rebuilt the clock, the jackpot assembly, and that stupid escalator, which is why I finally gave up. I should probably just give it a shave and take off the last three teeth on the escalator like they used to do in the casinos so only two coins show in the window before they drop...but I'd rather do it the right way. It's kind of like my old '72 Buick...every time I rebuilt something, it caused another problem!

Hi Gary- I'm not 100% sure, as I've never owned an E-series, but I think the nyliners are the same as the EMs (someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think Bally kept the basic mech the same and just changed the payout sensors). PM me...if you have two available, it couldn't hurt to try!
