OK here goes, lets see if I can provide all info you need in the first post  Cry Laughing Silly Me!

Picked up an early PE+ draw poker machine without imbedded validator.

The person I bought it from got it from an estate sale and it did not work. He never did anything with it.

I brought it home and opened it up and found the battery had leaked and did slight damage to the MPU and mother board. I elected to replace the MPU with a tested and told to me GOOD Super board . The mother board I removed and cleaned. Very minor acid damage and cleaned right up. Cleaned all connectors with de-oxit and cleand out case.

Put in new MPU that came with chips installed and fired it up to see what I had. Of course I get Call Attendant - EEPROM Data Error.

Open door and press white test button...no ding

close door and turn key I get statistacal data and can go thru all the stat screens and return to Verifying game memory, and go back to call attendant.

Removed MPU and installed clear clip in program socket. turn on game and get press test button message.  Press the test button and get eeprom data failure.

Installed the game chip and turned on game . get call attendant and CMOS date message, pressed white test button and did get the ding, closed the door and turned the key, get call attendant. further turning of the key does nothing. Open door and get eeprom data message. Pressing test button does nothing, close door and turn key get stats again.

Can not get to set-up menus. Tryed a set 38 chip and the machine states it is there and can not be used - try set denom first..can't get to set denom.

I swapped all the chips with good back-ups from another user and got same results exactly. tryed the chips from the baord that came with machine same results. pulled the game data chip and grounded it and put back..took me back to the CMOS dat message but then returned right back to the same thing.

Then I thought the CMOS chip on the mother baord might have been damaged, so I removed it, soldered in a new socket and installed a new CMOS chip and still no difference.

I am leaning towards the new MPU I got is not TESTED Good as stated..

What do you think ???

or am I missing something here as this is my first PE-Plus machine...

The only reason you need a set chip  is to activate and SET the bill validator which you said you don't have.
Escentially a S+ slot or PE+ poker is a credit machine and the Set chip tells the DBV how many credits to issue for a dollar.
This chip will not help your cause.

There are two CMOS chips. One is on the MPU board the other on the built in motherboard. They need to be in sync otherwise you get your error.  This error comes up commonly if you change series of chips.

The super-board uses both a program data chip and a game chip. The older board only uses the one chip.
The super-board can also run the one chip older set.  However changing from one series to another cause this error.
I am not saying it is your problem but is one likely cause. Another cause is that the MPU board battery dies and then bad data is written to the CMOS  and things are hooped.

With the door open turn the reset key - then close the door and follow the reset sequence. If this does not work you will need a clear chip.
The clear chip wipes, and formats the CMOS.

You should get stats with door closed.

Are you sure you cleared. When you insert the board with the clear chip in place make sure you press the set button. The machine should do a count down and then indicate its been cleared.

Again as asked what game/program chips do you have in.
We should be able to tell you if they are matched or not.

The chips that were on the super board when I bought it were x000516p data, xp000098 program, and cg2242

I have tryed data xm00003p, game xmp00004 with cg2174 character set. the stat screen verifys this info.

I have access to many others, tell me a good combination to put in and I will see if I have them.

Hey Tim!

Just to be clear, you did go through the reset sequences several times, yes?  In other words, you push-hold the white test button for about 5 seconds, close door and turn key.  Sounds easy enough to assume you did it all in exact order, but you really do have to continue to repeat these steps until all error messages go away.  That's the joy of these goodies.  Turning the key with door closed will bring up stat screens if you didn't hold the white reset key long enough.  The normal operations of a turn key is stat screens, unless of course, the white test button was held prior.

If you did do all of that, then reset is doing all it can do and there truly is a EEPROM error or game mismatch.  So what game, base, graphics and cap do you have? [EDIT] I see you now posted the game chips - ignore this question please!

My x000516P works with just a game chip and cg740 (Double Bonus Poker).

CG2174 works with my multi-game as well, but my chips are xm00003p and (xmp00002 or xmp00006).

Do you have these?  PM me if not.

I have all those, but think my clear chip is not working or I have a board issue. When I put the clear in the screen states that a clear chip is installed and sayes to press the test button. as soon as you touch the test button it changes to eeprom failure...no count down. tryed a few more clear chips and same results with each.

I open door, turn on game, screen shows verifing game memory, changes to call attendant. door still open press and hold white test button till I get ding, close door and turn key. Shows call attendant. open door and screen shows eeprom data message, pressing white button no longer dings when pressed. closing door and opening and still no ding when pressed, turn off machine and wait a short time, open door turn on press button get ding, close door and turn key, back to call attendant. open door get eeprom data message and white button no longer dings. Tried 6 different game sets that are multi or single, different caps that match and even changed the ram chip on the mpu. 3 different cmos chips on the motherboard. allways the exact same results. and the battery is good as well.

Okay, well don't smack me  frying pan but ....

You won't always get a ding.  I get the ding whenever the error message being addressed is CMOS.  But, after you press and hold a second time (with no ding), you then have to close the door and turn the key.  Turning the key after a white button hold completes the reset.  In other words, just pressing and holding the test button won't do it.  Pressing and holding the reset button correct only one error at a time.  So, the next error to clear is the EEPROM, which would be a press-hold, close door, turn key sequence.  If the stats show after turning the key, then it really is something with the board.

If you already did that am I'm just reading it wrong, then by all means, smack me!  And then go smack they guy that sold you the board! slap

For kicks, have you tried replacing the EEPROM on the motherboard (backplane)? (Is that what you were talking about when you said you replaced the CMOS on the motherboard?)

Other than that, I'd try a different MPU board, as you suspected.

Yes, little 8 pin chip on the backplane is new. no change

I thought the MB CMOS was the same size/number as the socketed one on the MPU.

ok..all fixed.

Here were the issues,

Not able to get into test mode even after changing multiple mpu's...bad motherboard

Hold buttons not working, all of them...test switch is a two position switch. When pressed it supplies a ground to the mpu to enter test mode an change test mode pages, that worked ok, when not pressed it supplies the ground to hold switch 1 which daisy chains to all five hold switches. The switch had acid damage inside that did not allow the contact to tak place in the non pressed state. Replaced the test switch an three hold buttons came to life. Next found spread femail connectors in socket 300 between the door harness and the mpu feed harness, tightened the terminals and got the final hold buttons working.

Set options and wired in the hang on the side validator. Enabled it with set38 chip and away we go..

That took some time and research and finaly got it done..Up and running 99%..have to replace one light bulb in a hold switch. Otherwise..perfect and mint machine !!
