I have a game that will only go 2 test button presses into the menu, then the reels flinch and the display goes blank.  A power reset, will get me back to square one.  I've had shorts cause this type of screwy behavior before, but I'm not seeing any shorts.  Any thoughts?

Where is your Test button located?
I've seen them in front of the power switch box,
behind the power switch box, and on the MPU panel box.

Make sure that you are not pressing the Test switch with credits on the display meter.

The test button is behind the power switch box, there is definitely no credits on the game as I've replaced the CPU board and RAM cleared it.  I've also replaced the backplane. It definitely seems like a short somewhere, but I've checked the handle mech, coin in assembly, buttons, etc.  Maybe I'll see if I have replacement game and reel chips...

What is displayed on the first two presses before it goes blank? What SP chip? Does the game play normally?

Lol, it's New Mexico jurisdiction.  And a strange jurisdiction it is.  arrow  I'm thinking they(Sunray Park and Casino) purchased all our S+ machines from IGT about 13 years ago.

I'd try either of these things then>>>

1). Swap out the SX chip with a proper SP Game chip such as SP1271 or SP1274.
SP1271 is a regular game chip while the SP1274 would be normally used for a Haywire type of game.
Your SS4705 92% reel chip is a normal 2 coin "Double Red, White& Blue" chip actually...
I think it can be used also for the 2coin "Double Black Jack", and "Hot Peppers" games as well...

2). Try another whole MPU board with known working chips.
If it works properly, then just swap out the SS reel chip onto that board!

On a side note: I don't recall what the "SX" value was for.
I'll take a wild guess and say that it's a tournament-style chip but
I DO know that tournament chips were marked as STxxxx chips.
Anyone is free to correct me on this...lol

Good call!  It was the MPU.  I must have pulled a bad one off the good pile as this was one of the first things I tried.  Thanks!
