I have a williams model 550 video slot.  I was getting a recurring battery failure roughly every ten minutes.  I replaced the 3.6V lithium battery on the board.  When I powered the game back up I got a CRITICAL ERROR 13 memory corruption - must clear RAM.  Well I found out that I needed a RAM clear chip.  I replaced the XU3 chip with the RAM clear chip and powered the game up.  I was expecting some instructions or something but it didn't do anything.  The screen came on bright but then dimmed to black.  I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if the clear chip is bogus can someone help me out PLEASE?

I suspect you need to replaced the 24c04 eeprom on the
backplane. unfortunately this chip goes bad on Wms slots
(more so than IGT - i've only replaced one on an IGT PE,
but i've replaced a number of them on Wms model 40x
slots. And i've heard of others replacing t his chip on model
550 slots too.)

Rob, a couple of things that may sound simple but are sometimes missed. Make sure the eprom legs are all seated properly and the chip placement is correct (notch in eprom matches notch on board) also when reinserting te board make sure it is completely seated in the backplane board, sometimes indications of this will be thee black scrreen, a constant "8" on the MPU and no "bong" on power up.

Well I checked all that but I still seem to be having the same problem.  I have a feeling my clear chip may not have been copied correctly.  Can you tell where I can get one over the net.

Well I fixed the the critical error problem I reset the RAM but now I'm having a different problem.  Every time I cash out the machine. I get a "HOPPER JAM" alert.  I don't have a coin hopper and I handpay.  HERE are the options I put.

COIN MECHANICS:  NO COIN ACCEPTOR - USA - 5 cents - NONE

DENOM: 5 cents - SUB-COIN-HANDPAY

could someone please help me???

could you get a menu that would enable you to disable the hopper?
Or set the hopper limit to zero?

The original problem was you needed a different version Clear Chip, the Hopper Error, is you need to reclear the machine set hopper limit to 0001, machine will lock up on Cash Out for Handpay, you can't cash out 1, it will throw the tilt again, this is the Gameroom Common Set Up, you don't need to replace any backplane chip in these

Forgive me for asking, but why 1? I've seen the same posts for the S+ no-coin setup several times, and I beg to differ. I set my hopper limit to 0 and it works perfectly with absolutely no chance of the hopper engaging. I've done the same with my GameMaker now, and it works there as well.

Wouldn't the Wms550 accept a 0 hopper limit as well?

Just a thought.

I am not being smart here, but do you think I would say put at 1 to have a possible problem if someone cashed out 1, the Video WMS won't do 0, and on hundreds of WMS in the Gamerooms in the South it isn't a problem, it is set at 1, but I guess if it is in a home, some twirp would have to cash out 1 to cause the tilt, I don't why it has to be, just the way to do it, if it is wrong then there are many doing it, not all games are the same I suppose

Some games let you set it to zero and some don't.  Most of the older titles do not let you and the newer ones do.

If you try to set it to zero and it's not allowed it will just go back to what it was set for before.

On the NXT platform you can disable the hopper and or printer which will put everything to a handpay.

On the 1.5+ there is no option so you must use 1 or zero if allowed in the limits menu.

Jim, you know much more about the 550 platform that I do. It's just that there have been many S+ posts that suggest this method when a setting of 0 would have been a better choice, especially in a home where there were no coins at all in the hopper and possible a newbie owner who might not know what to do if the kids hit the cash button at 1 credit and tilted the machine. I had thought that since the 550 platform was newer and more sophisticated than the Gamemaker that it would have such an option as well. So I've learned something new.

Thanks for the help but I was wondering if you could let me know what menu I do this in.  I'm decent with the pot of gold menu's but this is one of my first williams machines.

OK,

Big Tippers only allows for 1 to be set.

I could swear that some of the last games made let you set it to zero but I memory might be failing me.

Here is where to change it to at least 1.

open the main door and hit the test button (under the monitor shelf)

also you must have zero credits to make the change.

Thanks alot everyone I finally got that think up and running again.  I tried both of the suggested settings and only the 00001 worked on mine.  thanks for all the help with this one I was getting really annoyed with it there for a while.
