Me at work

« on: March 02, 2009, 03:35:04 AM »

It really frosts my butt every time I find one of those ads for REAL SLOT MACHINES - on craigslist - ebay etc.  Case in point
                                       http://tampa.craigslist.org/pnl/for/1055255107.html
Harrahs Casino !   $750 !   As dealers in REAL slots - we have to play games with EBAY POLICE to sell according to their RULES - yet FRAUDULENT DESCRIPTIONS is okay?    Its bad enough IGT machines have to be DISGUISED to meet the EBAY POLICE - but PASHISLOS ?  I feel for the poor saps who get taken by these sellers.

I see your point. These are nowhere near being real slots nor ever being from a Vegas casino.

It's funny, but here in Washington state, our all-wise Gambling Commission considers Pachislo slots to be illegal gambling devices subject to seizure and destruction!

They ar not real slots, I have not owned one but I have seen a couple of nicer looking Skill stop slots at a local coin operated machine dealer
They had decent looking chrome and cabinet, I had to look at them closely to notice the reel stop buttons on them.
They looked more like the EM in style, not the pashislo ones we see on ebay.

When I had to make a couple of reports to the police concerning the theft of my laptop and being assaulted by someone outside my apartment
The local police officers saw my machines, and said nothing about them.

The only way that Pachi machines come close to an IGT type is if you put on an IGT arm and add the auto stop with credit options. Still it is only close, not the same.

Note: The price is way off too. You can buy both machines from a retail vendor for about $ 125.00 each.

I got my introduction into slots via the Pachislos. I was out for a friend at lunch to Sams club. Since the death-dogs went down in about 15 seconds we decided to wander
We came across these slots and with a little goading he convincd me to pick up one for the game room. I think I paid $75.00.
I got this home and the wife says.... So just where do you plan to put that.

So off I went to whisks going out of business sale and bought a Cherry wood TV stand for $125.
I get this home and set it up and start having a lot of fun, so the wife says there looks to be room for two on top of that stand.

Back to Sams club and I picked up another.

I went down the road for a while doing the quarter conversion thing only to find out that US quarters get jammed in Paschilo hoppers - Canadian quarters work better.
The second one was a bit more of a challenge because it didn't use the same kind of coin mech. They are very mechanical. No sophistication at all.

I then started looking into the Slot arm kits, but these are nothing better than a stick on a spring. I had looked into getting a IGT one, made sure I had room for all the mechanicals.
I found a place to mill the arm down to size and rebend it, only to find out that pulling the sucker practically lifts the machine off the stand, or at the very least you stand a good chance of tipping it over.
So out I go to home depot to get some 4" bolts and washers to mount this to the stand.

The autostop chips are not to bad to install but as there are like 40 vendors who make pachislos there are about the same variety of chips. Then of course you deal with the sleazy vendors who sell you fake components and tell you that
I either bought the wrong one or smoked it on the install .....

The next deal was getting a bill validator. In the Japanese casinos they have bill exchanges just like arcades. So I started to look for one of those..... since there is no room inside the pachi's for one anyways.
Right about then the same buddy who goated me into buying the first one of these says... well if you wanted a vegas machine why don't you just buy a vegas machine.....
Its sort of like the light bulb went on..... I now have several of these including progressives etc.

So the good....and the bad....
First off I would encourage anyone who has bought a Pashilo to keep it pure. It is a Japanese gaming device, and its not a vegas slot. You can mod it to death but it won't ever be a vegas slot and what you end up with no one will want.
Although I just gave mine away as I don't have room in the new house they are fun. The Pashilos are more interactive than slots. They have quite the light and sound show.  Ideally they are good to have around for the younger generation.

You can't change game kits. So for us who like to tinker the pachislo is like a solid state radio. Nothing to fiddle with.
This also means that your supply of spare parts is practially zilch
No progressives. Certainly no linked progressives.

Single denomination - pachi tokens come in one size.

Life time. The Japanese gaming laws require the machines not to spend more than two years in a pachi parlor. These machines are not built for a 40 year life span.
This also means that your supply of spare parts is practially zilch. If a machine dies its replaced.

I think the US gaming companies could learn a few things from the Japanese, such as the trandusive reels, and story boards that encourage longer play. You get to see more of the story the longer you play....

I certainly hope they never adopt the japanese form factor. However wth TITO and LCD ..... more games per sq foot = higher revenue per sq foot. I can't see any reason why they would not be heading down this path.

Of course if you live in a state where a Pachislo is legal, once you convert it to take quarters or dollar bills, then some states consider that an illegal gambling device. So leave it on tokens.

Good advice. There's really no reason to convert to quarters anyway, because Pachislos don't pay out the way slot machines do. Japanese law restricts the maximum payout to be 15 coins, which is why they have bonus rounds, and which has steered the development of these machines into LCD story-driven play incentive, as Jay pointed out, rather than large-win play incentive.

I tend to think of the Pachi's as amusement devices rather than slot machines. (not quite as fun as pinball, though...) I'm always more interested in the entertainment value of playing rather than looking to win something. On a slot machine, I'm looking for that big hit.

They had a VERY hard time selling these things at the last arcade auction in Dallas. Most went for $50 or less.

Of course, no tokens included. URG. That adds up quick.

When I traveled a lot to San Jose, I'd get the dinner & game card combo from a certain gaming establishment there. If I didn't feel like playing, I'd go get as many tokens as I could.  stir the pot / get cooking That's how mom's pachi ended up with so many tokens.
