Players Edge 21 ('85 IGT) - Info Needed Please

Just picked up this machine for $200. I have tried to do searches on this version of the players edge and came up with almost nothing..

- Everything works fine.. Screen has burn but not too bad. (No sound.. even after adjusting the small volume knob.)

Can anyone chime in about this unit?

How much is it worth?

Can a new/newer screen be installed easily?

Any tips on getting the sound to work? Turning the volume knob on the lower board just makes a static sound while being turned.

Hi Harvey,

Let me preface this by letting you know that I have no experience with the Fortune One machines, but I will do what I can to help.

When you say you hear static when turning the volume knob ... Is it fairly loud or very faint?
Make sure both the wires connecting the speaker are secure.  
Do you have a multimeter to use for testing?  
With the power OFF, If you connect one side of your meter to ground (chassis?) and do a resistance check,  One of the speaker terminals should read between 8 and 16 ohms.  The other terminal should show a short to ground.

Next, Take a look at the board that the volume control is attached to and make sure all of the connectors are secure.

If you can post a close up Clear and detailed picture of that Sound board (the one that the volume knob is attached to) that would help.

Hi Commtech,

The static sound only is heard when I slowly turn the volume knob.., Once the volume is either all the way down or all the way up it will make a static sound (similar to the sound of unplugging a home stereo speaker and plugging it back in while music is playing).

I do not have a multimeter as of now. I recently dove into the slot collecting hobby and plan on purchasing numerous tools/equip soon. I'm going pro! haha

How are the wires attached to that board?  Is there an edge connector or are they soldered on?
If there is an edge connector, check to see if it is attached securely to the board.

Once you get the multimeter, we can proceed further.
You don't have to spend a lot on a Multimeter. You can find inexpensive ones for under $20 that will do the job for you.

Good! So you measured 8 ohms to ground. That would indicate you have a good speaker.  

Next comes the fun part ... I am going to have you do some measurements on the sound board. I know that it's mounted upside down under the monitor shelf so this may be a bit tricky for you.

Now in order for me to show you where I want you to measure from, I am going to need a few more pictures of the Sound board so I can see all of the components and the Edge Wiring.

See if you can get me at least one clear and detailed picture from directly below the sound board (so the picture appears to be looking straight down) so it shows the entire board with all four corners including the edge wiring.

Ok. I tried to zoom out as much as I could. I can take 2 half pictures if needed.

Another thing to add is that when I turn the machine off or on there is static noise coming through the speakers also.. I didn't mention that from the start. It seems there is simply no sound being produced from the sound board?. I even wiggled the connector to see if maybe it was a bad connection and nothing. - Is there a reset with the fortune I? The game never shows a main screen, it simply sits at the last hand played until coins are inserted.. Maybe someone can chime in about that.

I'm ready for the fun part!! Soldering iron in hand!!  hahaah

I need to see more detail. Higher Resolution would help.
The First picture you posted is a good resolution with good detail. 
If I can see several pictures in sections that would be OK also.
One of the Pics needs to clearly show the wiring to the board.  That is were I will have you start.
Could there be a plug underneath the board that connects with the rest of the machine? 
The block diagram I have shows TEN circuit connections coming off that board. 
I can only see a couple of wires from those pictures.

There is only one plug that connects to this board.. 4 wires total.

Yes indeed. What you have in your hand is the Power Source (115 Volts AC) input to the board And the Speaker output.  
No input wiring.    That empty socket as Proton pointed out is were the ribbon cable from the motherboard plugs into.

Yup, ribbon wires.. Do you know the name to this wire/harness?

I would call it the Fortune One "Motherboard to Soundboard Input wiring harness (with 16 Pin DIP Plugs on each end)".

We have a lot of surplus vendors here.  I would post a "WTB Fortune One Soundboard wiring harness" and perhaps one of our awesome vendors may have one.
