How to clear a 41 improper spin on a Bally E Series?

I can get all 3 reels to stop individually on test mode 8 but when I try to play the machine it accepts the coins and spins but I get a tilt before the first reel stops, is it the reel reader that is out of adjustment?

Your first reel reader could just need to be cleaned and adjusted or it could be bad. Try moving it to the second or third reel to see if your error moves and changes. 41 indacates reel one, 42 is the second and a 43 is your third reel. What model number is your machine? Do you know if you have the 50V readers with the small light bulbs or the newer 5V that are infare red?

Might also be the kick switch if the first reel is not locking.
You can do a switch test and check them, or check them with a meter.

Got it semi-working. I adjusted the first reel and now when I try the machine it will accept the coins and I can pull the handle and all 3 reels stop as they should but when I try it a 2nd time the 1st and 2nd reel will stop but the 3rd one keeps spinning and I get the 43 code. I can re set the machine and can repeat the same process, game will play correct the 1st time then it won't stop the 3rd reel on the next play. All the light on the readers are on on all 3 reels in the # 8 test. Could it just be a dirty reel reader? If I clean the reel readers, what is a safe solvent/cleaner to use that wont harm the readers? For what it's worth, I spun all 3 reels freely just to make sure they were not touching any loose wires, etc. Check that with the door open and checked it with the door closed and they al spin fine with nothing rubbing against them.

I use rubbing alcohol and a Q-Tip to clean the reader boards. Have you oiled the reel hub? There is a small oiling hole on one side so the oil can get to the needle bearings. Use a light weight oil. I had a machine that was doing basically the same thing, but all it needed was a couple drops of oil. If the reel speeds spin slow it will give error codes too.

If it the 50 volt bulbs I use windex and a Qtip.
The 5 volt readers I use water and a Qtip.
Then blow dry before powering up.
I had my last E2000 that would give random
errors (41-71-91) till I cleaned the bulbs, then
it all stopped after that.

I've swapped the reel readers around, cleaned the LEDs on each reader, used a hypodermic oiling tool to oil the hubs and verified that the kick and arm switches are in the proper open and closed position. Here is what's happening now:
When I turn the game on I have a 71 000 code and it will accept the quarters but when I pull the handle, the reels continue to spin and none of them stop. Could I have a bad I/O board?

Does your machine still have the cherry switch located on the door right next to the lock? I have found that switch can cause you problems. I usually remove them and connect the wires together. I guess it was Bally's early version of door optics so you couldn't play the game unless the door was locked.

It does have the switch you're talking about, when I get back in front of the machine again I will try your suggestion.

Check its operation and if it wired normally open or closed? If I remember it should be closed when the doors locked.

I had a similar problem on my E-1000. The fix was just a little gun oil on reel #1.  The reel seemed to spin OK by hand but on looking closer I could see that with a handle pull it just did not spin with any force as the other 2 reels did.  5 months later and all 3 reels spin about the same. No more "Tilt"!!

I hope your answer is just that simple!
