Black Lights in Slot Machines

I was talking in another thread about putting black lights in slot machines.  I bought some  lights for my Crystal 7 machine and didn't like it but I also tried them in my S+ Double Diamond and I like it.  I have to say that in the pictures our C7 machine looks good but in person it doesn't.  Check out the pics.  What do you think?

Ashyron, yeah I think you're right. In the Crystal Sevens it washes out all the colors, which is a strong point for that machine. I also think it looks better on the DD machine.

What about fading?  Wouldn't the black lights accelerate this effect?  Especially on the reel strips.

I was thinking of using Black Light with my Munsters theme but only by the reel strips.....now something else to consider.....

I'd keep the black light away from the strips. From the pictures, it looks like the best effect using the black light is in the belly glass of the DD; I might even take it out of the award as well, although it's hard to tell from the picture.

I didn't even think about the fact that these black lights get hotter than the regular fluorescent bulbs.  Never mind having them in the machine, I took one of them back to Lowe's today.  I would have taken both of them back but I dropped one in the garage, of course it broke.  There's $10 bucks down the drain    Even behind the glass of the DD machine, it was messing with my eyes   The belly glass was the best place for it and it wasn't bright enough in the awards glass to show anything. 

I seen some LED lights that I kind of thought would look pretty cool instead of the fluorescent bulbs in the reel glass but I dunno.  I'm pretty used to the fluorescent bulbs and that's what I have always been used to seeing and besides I have plenty of things keeping me busy, like trying to finish my game/family room.    Maybe one day I'll find some led lights that just hook up like fluorescent bulbs do.  And speaking of fluorescent, do the fluorescent bulbs run on 110 current or 12v current?  I heard that the bulbs in the switches are 6v (easier when its time to get LED's for them) but not sure about the fluorescent.

There are always cold cathrode tubes that are plenty bright. They use these in PC cabinets.

It's actually the ultraviolet light that does the most damage, although the heat would play a roll. The cold cathode tubes that Jay spoke of have been used by several members and look good when mounted in machines.

I believe the fluorescents run on 110V.

Well'  :88-this is how the blue colored CCFL, cold-cathode fluorescent lamps look like and it almost look like black light??huh...really cool.. i used 2/12" CCFL, they're so tiny cool bulb(no heat)
??where do you buy that colored tubes over the fluorescent bulbs??

That actually looks very good with that theme.. gives it a horror movie appearance, although the munsters were never ment to be scary

You could probably make some yourself pretty cheap.. just use some gels that DJ's use in club lights, I don't think there would be a heat issue

I'm jealous of the BACK light reels -  I love that effect. 
I think a light under the reels in addition to the light above the reels would look good.

Yes, the blue does look good. I was going to do that to my Munsters in green after I did the Phantom in red. Have to admit the backlit adds to the effect!!

I was told in a thread several months ago that if the strips are original - they will not fade.   Do you think the heat  of a black light would change that?

jdkmunch, I have several original IGT strips that have faded in spots where the machine sat idle for awhile. The fluorescent tubes, sunlight, etc. will do that. Although if I remember correctly most of those have been with the water soluble inks.

Yeah that's exactly what I've been afraid of.    I keep my machines on for a while and then turn them off if I know I'm not going to use then for a while just to avoid that issue.   Even a tiny bit of fading would drive me nuts.

I always thought that the cold cathode CCFL lights were best really.
They only draw 5 mA per hour, very low heat but very bright!
It can be hooked right into the 12 volts coming out of
the brown 4-pin molex connector on the door harness right near the change light switch.
A company called logisyscomputer.com sells them...
They were originally made for clear computer cases to show off the insides...
