What's the difference between an IGT S and an IGT S+?

There are a couple of differences.
1. The S slot does not support a DBV
2. None of the Eproms for a S+ work in a S but the opposite is fine.
- The S+ use SS and ST chips (27C256 120ns), I believe that the older S use RG and RT chips (27c64 200ns)
3. The reels spin slower on an S but you would have to have a S+ next to it to notice.
4. Security features - door optics that are digitally pulsed, hopper optics that can't be blinded by a light pen, coin optics AND coin comparitor.

The early S+'s did not have a DBV either, but you could occasionally find one with a "side car" - a butt ugly box bolted to the side of the S+ to do bill validation and often player tracking. To look at the DBV less S+ and a S side by side they would basically be indistinguishable unless you looked at the tiny little plate on the base below the handle that says S+ / mfg date / etc. When you opened them they would be quite different internal layout.

For some of the orginal themes like "Double Diamond" the machine would play/sound the same.

S machines did not have a motherboard/backplane board. All the connectors plug directly into MPU.The S+ has a motherboard/backplane board, with connectors plugging into motherboard/backplane instead of MPU. Software/game themes were much more more limited on an S versus an S+ as well.

Jay, I think the chip was an RS and it was what the S+ has on the SP and SS chips.  Basicaly the S+ had more memory and a faster processor, enabling more virtual reel stops.  I believe the S had a max 64 stops, having more stops enable having bigger payouts, as the odds of hitting the top prize are that much lower.

I am sure you are right. The RS does sound familar. I might have been thinking of the non plus PE.
